Holiday Gift Ideas for your student??

I asked my son for a Christmas list when he was home at Thanksgiving and he never really did respond. I think he’s way too busy to think about it and he isn’t really in need of much. We got him some winter clothes and boots when he was home, but that isn’t really a Christmas present.

My son is in a dorm so there isn’t room for anything he won’t use.

Did any of your kids ask for anything interesting that you’d care to share? Any good ideas of your own?

GPS for bike

Tom’s shoes and an i-pod shoulder holder for the gym and some new make-up and a manicure set. Pretty simple this year. I love it!

You parents of Ds always have it easy!

Last year I bought gift cards from the various chain restaurants and stores in his college town.

I’m not a student but I told my BF I wanted a warm fuzzy queen sized fleece blanket. He told me that isn’t an acceptable Christmas present and to try again with my request. LOL.

My sister is 22 and she asked for a couple of movies, a hat, and a few other things. I wound up buying her a book, 3 dvds (thankfully they were on sale at amazon on black friday, so she’s getting 2x the gifts she normally would get from me as a result), and a box of powdered cheese flavors to put on popcorn. (i give her a gag gift every year. this years gift stems from the fact that when my mother and i went to the movies with her, she got “nacho” flavored cheese and put it on our popcorn that we were sharing. my mom and i thought it was so gross that we wound up not even touching the popcorn and she had it all to herself. naturally, when i saw this box of random flavored cheeses I had to buy it for her. I might pick up a box of popcorn when I go grocery shopping and wrap that up as well, because i can just see her asking where the popcorn is to go with her nacho cheese. haha.)

I love the gift card idea. My mom always puts random gift cards in my stocking for local places… just small increments like 5, 10 dollars…

very small umbrella
gift cards…starbucks, i-tunes
stocking…carmex, altoids, pens, post-its

college son asked for Avatar DVD. Planet Earth DVD.

I have been buying gift cards at Target for different places to eat…Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, PF Changs, Applebees, etc. With the new target cards you get 5% off. Sounds like a deal for me! I have been using them for midterm and finals gifts in a card. My Ds love them. D1 is getting new Ipod touch and money for upcoming wedding. D2 is getting clothes, designer purse and cash for Spring Break trip. I love Christmas shopping!

Fendergirl, better than a fleece blanket are these–
[Microfiber Fleece Sheet Set](http://www.thecompanystore.com/Microfiber-Fleece-Sheet-Set/E3M5-ps,default,pd.html)
They are yummy! So many colors and they even come in Twin XL. I ordered some for everyone.

My daughter has asked for an expensive software suite that she knows she’ll need to be able to do assignments in her dorm room instead of the computer center. She just doesn’t want to part with her own cash for it, so that will be her main gift from us this year.

Hulu plus (on top of a netflix subscription). Warning… Netflix keeps getting renewed automatically, so remember that you"re giving it!

A few things that all my kids asked for when they lived in dorms:

Noise-canceling headphones
Earbuds with good sound quality
Good computer speakers

Will also be doing TOM’S shoes gift certificates…a camera for one D whose current one is about 6 years old…

Out budget is pretty tight.

Son graduated may and just now found a job after several worrying months - he is moving tomorrow - already gave him his Christmas - a GPS for the 1200 mile drive, some of his favorite bbq sauce, an alarm clock to back up his cell phone alarm which apparently failed to go off a few times and he missed class, Some terry’s choc oranges (they have been a christmas stocking tradition for years) and some English hob nob cookies to nibble while he drives.

College daughter and fiance - I am lost as to what to get them. His mum got them a 50 inch flat screen so whatever we get will be an anti climax!!

Can you get the educational discount even though you are buying it?

I put in a request with fiance for a keurig machine. I asked my parents for a couple of movies, a bath tub pillow, and a pyrex bake n store set. Thinking about those microfiber fleece sheets, now!

I am allergic to chocolate now so my mom is going to have a hell of a time coming up with stocking stuffers. We usually get a stocking full of little hersheys and reeses cups and maybe a few little trinkets thrown in, some cheapo jewelery, deck of cards, whatever. Not sure what we’ll be doing this year. Maybe yarn for my crocheting. :)

A netbook can make a great gift, as can a GPS (if the student has a vehicle). A membership to AAA can be practical, particularly if the vehicle has some miles on it & may need towing. Somehow, S often ends up with cash & a few food gifts (his favorite snacks). D sometimes gets some jewelry. We will end up taking them clothing shopping after Christmas as well–they do better when they try on the garments, since both are difficult to fit.

One caveat about the fleece sheets-- they make my cat nuts. All night long, the kneading, the nest-making. I am not getting much sleep.

Son took up some new sports in college. Last year he wanted a squash racket. This year cross country ski boots.
