Holiday Gift Ideas for your student??

^Someone needs to pass that gift idea on to my mom! That’s a really cute idea.

S2 asked for Beethoven’s Nine symphonies and a Serenity t-shirt. He hinted that he’d like a portable sundial from Thinkgeek. [ThinkGeek :: Sundial Ring](http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/e56d/) His big present though is that we are footing half the bill for research travel over winter break (school is covering the other half.)

S1 is impossible. He usually gets a geeky t-shirt, maybe a CD, sometimes a board game.

Cartoon collections aren’t bad for the boys who are hard to shop for. This collection is great: [Amazon.com: The Rejection Collection: Cartoons You Never Saw, and Never Will See, in The New Yorker (9781416933397): Matthew Diffee, Robert Mankoff: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Rejection-Collection-Cartoons-Never-Yorker/dp/1416933395) I see it now has a volume two.

Stockings are my favorite part of Christmas. Anyone in the house Christmas morning gets one. I will never stop doing stockings. :)

We try to be fairish, but we have one kid who always has ideas for what to give him and the other if he has any ideas they are expensive - ie “a new computer”.

As my SIL always say, money is always the correct size & never needs to be returned. That is her favorite gift to give or receive. I take her out to a nice meal whenever I have to get her something. She’s impossible to shop for. :)

Do boys who aren’t specifically interested in fashion dislike getting clothes? Like, 21 year olds? Thinking about saving fiance’s gift for a different holiday, and he likes NONE of the traditional boy things and does need sweaters.

Old Navy is having two for one on sweaters until the 11th.

My Ss would not consider clothes a gift, though I do always get each a geeky tee. Last year it was “Carpe Noctum”. Still looking for this year.

Any thoughts about digital cameras? Is a Kodak 12 mp 3x good enough? Around $89 at the big W. Or, Nikon or Canon, 14mp 3.6/4x. Under $100. These aren’t for any sort of artistic photos- just the study abroad and to post on FB. She wants something as slim as possible. Any thoughts about what makes any inexpensive camera better or worse than another? I’ve heard a 12mp is good enough to blow up an image. ? Thx.

I bought a Nikon or myself and one for my D at Costco for no more than $129 (D’s was actually $109 over the Thanksgiving weekend) - it’s slim, has rechargable batteries, a 4MB card, a camera case and comes with a coupon for 100 free prints from Costco. I think it’s a Nikon 3000 (?). Easy to use, takes good pictures.

Thanks for all the GPS recs. I bought one today (Garmin Nuvi) for D2, along with a couple of accessories. Hopefully this will cut down on her getting “turned around” and ending up in scary areas. Dallas is NOT a city you want your 16 y/o getting lost in! Also got her a set of fleece sheets, also recommendations I read about here. You all have given me several good stocking stuffer ideas, too. :)

J Crew has a great promotional sale on Bling sweaters. My 18 year old daughter loved them. Great colors. We bought three. One for her and two for the college age cousins!

If you buy a camera for overseas use, be sure to get an spare battery. I loved the little camera I took on a trip this year but I was plugging it in every night to charge it up. If I’d had a spare along, I could have kept taking photos during an entire days’ sightseeing.

My 21 year old still gets excited about the $5 lego in his stocking. He doesn’t play with it, but he still enjoys that reminder of childhood.

College senior son’s laptop died last month, so he got a new one and he insists it’s his present. We bought older son a tv while we were there for Thanksgiving, partly so H and S2 could watch football. Each is getting a fleece, socks, small things.

H and I are getting a new fence.

I have bought tee shirts with phrases from the big Bang Theory from cafe press. We love that show.

Ordered S2 (college jr) a new duffle bag to replace the one he’s been using since ninth grade. Got a really good deal from Cabelas. Now maybe he’ll bring back my suitcase he hauled his stuff back to school in at Thanksgiving.

S1 has requested wool socks to wear with his (military) uniform and books.

I swear I got this idea from cc last year. I bought my older son a gamers lap desk last xmas and my younger college son wants one too. They are really light weight, compact and easy to store and inexpensive. Perfect for the dorm/apt or hanging out in the family room when they are home.

If you have kids who attend a school in a snow belt and have a car with them, the Sno Brum
is a great gift. It pushes the snow right off the car and doesn’t scratch the paint. I’ve had one for a couple of years and requested a new one for Christmas. I know that Amazon carries them. They cost around $20 (sometimes less).

kayakct…are you talking about the bling button cardigans???

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this (they are on MY list). Echo Design makes gloves with a special thread in the finger and thumb pad that allows you to use a touch screen. I can never answer a call on my iphone with gloves on and it drives me nuts!! You can find them at www. no space echodesign dot com look for ‘for him’.

I’ll second (or third/forth) the Netflix subscription. They now have an option for streaming only (no discs through the mail) for $8/month or $120/year. This allows TV streaming through a Wii, Blueray, streaming directly on a computer, and to most mobile devices (i know iphones but probably others as well).

Not very exciting, but the other thing we got our boys was a logitech mouse for their laptops that has a bluetooth dongle that is almost flush. You don’t have to remove it for transport so there is less of a chance it will get lost. It can be used with a mac.

Thanks nysmile!

I just ordered the Sno Brum and a Collapsible Emergency Snow Shovel for D’s car (from Amazon)

The snow has already started at Syracuse University so these will be great gifts!
