Holiday movies

I just saw J.Edgar, with a friend who mentioned she considered it to me the first movie she has seen that is sure to be competing in the next Academy Awards. ( she is probably right, but what a strange & scary man)

For many years it seems our family either saw a Harry Potter or LOTR movie over Thanksgiving break & since we are all going to be together this year, I am looking for something comparable.

So far the Muppet movie is a possibility, but am looking for films that might be opening that weekend or still playing. Any other ideas? ( no small children but I thought the Muppets might be fun anyway)

The NY Times had a good run down on what’s coming up for the holidays

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and My Week With Marilyn look interesting. And I’ve been waiting for Alexander Paynes new movie Descendants (it’s been 7 years since Sideways!!)

And if you are a film buff, look into Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist”.

So, maybe this is a different thread, but I’m curious is people have favorite Thanksgiving-themed movies.

Our favorites are Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, and Avalon.

Are there any others that people like and would recommend?

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a family favorite. Thanksgiving-themed movies we like: Miracle on 34th Street (yes it’s mostly about Christmas but starts at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and so we usually kick off holiday movies at our house with this one); Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter and Robert Downey, Jr.; Hannah and Her Sisters (Woody Allen film set between two Thanksgiving dinners, with Michael Caine and Barbara Hershey). I haven’t seen Pieces of April (Patricia Clarkson, Katie Holmes, good reviews) but it’s set at Thanksgiving and several friends have recommended it to me.

One of my kids likes to watch all the Thanksgiving episodes from sitcoms we’ve got on DVD, particularly Friends and Will and Grace. Some of these are very funny and they fit in well while you’re cooking/baking.

I also LOVE Planes Trains and Automobiles

I think we are more into Christmas themed movies …it’s something we really like to relax to on Christmas day…some of us ( though not me ) don’t even get dressed that day

Amongst our favorites :
Elf
Christmas Story ( think I know it verbatim by now )
The Family Stone
The Holiday
Love Actually

We don’t necessarily watch them on Christmas day …but everyone gets at least one DVD and our day is about eating , movies and not leaving our house

Since we have a retail store , the season can be hectic and my husband in particular works long days from black Friday until Christmas Eve…he is definately one to stay in pjs all day
