I’m a little sad that I have to bring him back to school Monday afternoon. I’ll miss seeing him around the house. But on the other hand, wifey, daughter and I were in a routine that had to be tweaked to accommodate his return, so we’ll be going back to that. For example, daughter is psyched to get the 3rd car all to herself again. His room is a disaster again so I guess it will be good to get his stuff out and we’ll have another chance to evaluate how that room is used and what else we can do to trim it down & clean it up. I’m so sentimental though. I keep thinking about when he first came back. sigh
He goes back tomorrow afternoon. It is time. It has been nice having him home, but after the bustle of the holidays, he’s been pretty bored I think these last 2 weeks as the rest of us have resumed “normal life”.
My D went back on Sunday. I agree that it was nice to have her home but it did kind of take me out of my new routine. It funny, when she is at school I have no need to know where she is minute to minute. When she came home I quickly fell back into the “you have to check in” stance. There is way too much going on in the world and I just did not want her wandering around without me having some idea where she was. She pretty much complied.
As soon as she confirmed she had made it back to campus and was in her room, my radar went off and I returned to my pre-break routine. She will be home on March 6 so I can last until then.
@Tperry1982 Thanks for articulating that: I feel exactly the same way. Even though my D has clearly matured tremendously in the last 6 months, I found myself regressing to needing to know where she was while she was home, too. It was a wonderful visit and I miss her again now that she’s gone, but it’s really nice to turn that radar off again and relax a bit.
He packed his bags and just kept shaking his head and saying, why am I bringing so much stuff back to school? This is more than I brought home! I brought too much home! Then later when discussing it with our daughter who goes next year, I had an idea. Don’t bring anything home! Just scrounge around for whatever is still in the house! Brilliant?
Update - D has severe tooth pain and is coming home Thursday night for an appointment on Friday morning. Must cheaper to bring her home to our dentist than to come up with a new, out of plan, dentist up there who does not know her. Dental insurance sucks, even the good government plan I have. At least I will get to see her for about 48 hours. She is back on the train at o’dark thirty Saturday morning because she needs to be back on campus before 11 a.m.
There is something to be said for going to school relatively close to home - 5.5 hours.
awww good luck. my son found out about a cavity while he was home, his 1st, but he has to make an appointment maybe during spring break to have it taken care of.
D flew back to school 2 weeks ago. We were so excited to pick her up from the airport after not seeing her for 4 months. However, I have to admit, the first few days were difficult for me. She was speaking so fast and in a lower register than when she left. She just seemed so sarcastic and abrasive. I knew it wasn’t intentional and I could see how happy she was but I struggled with it. At one point she really hurt my feelings with one of her comments and I had to call her out. She felt terrible. I felt terrible. I want her to grow and I expect her to change but well, it was just so jarring which seemed weird considering I heard from her every day she was gone. After the first week though, she started being more herself… still quick to debate but not nearly so combative. She fell back into our own family style of sarcasm and jest and life was good. She’s still 17 and hadn’t quite been driving a year so there were still state mandated restraints on her in terms of driving, being out late, ect. It was never an issue.
We were sad to see her go but I also found I really missed my S while she was here. We’ve been getting really close since she left… sorta like the old days when he was little and home and D was in school. D and S get along great but she does cast a large shadow achievement wise. I’m not glad D is away but I also think S really benefits from being the “only” during his high school years. It’s nice to see him coming into his own and not having to work so hard for some of that sunshine.
@rumrunner - DS doesn’t bring anything home but his backpack. Too much effort.lol
Wow! Both of my daughters returned to their respective schools on January 3 and 4.
^ DS went back December 30th…He wanted to spend New years with his GF…But he’s only 45 minutes away so we have already seen him once since school started.
@Tperry1982, when DS (8 years older than yours - the time flies) was in college, we noticed his school’s dental plan was not that great. I think his school’s med plan (but not dental plan – is it “Delta” dental plan?) is like a HMO as it is served by school’s affiliated med school’s teaching hospital.
It will likely be near Christmas when we see DS again (unless we fly to see him before then.) It is sad because the distance between us is so great now (coast-to-coast.)
DS went back Dec 30 (Saturday) as well, but it is expected to be back before Jan. 1st for everyone of 3rd/4th year students.
@mcat - we have Federal insurance so I was able to waive paying for hospitalization coverage. Regular medical is covered by tuition and they have a well run full service student health center. Dental is not a part of that. Plus, she has long standing dental issues and was in the middle of having some of them fixed. It was just easier to bring her home to her doctor. A new doctor would have had to do x-rays, etc. Here, he just dove right in and fixed the problem.
Our kids are hard headed. Mine is vegan and I keep telling her the lack of calcium and Vitamin D in her diet would come back to haunt her. Maybe this will make her take her supplements more regularly. I can only hope.
It’s been a couple weeks since son has been back. Before he left Mom was saying how she wanted to go into Boston and take him out to dinner. That never happened and she was thinking a weekend. What’s interesting is that our son has been texting asking when we were coming in to town. 1st semester we felt like we had to control our urges to go in to see him or contact him, now he seems to be asking for contact. Don’t know why. He’s going to Philly for a concert and driving back during overnight hours next weekend and I’m not happy about that, especially considering the weather lately. I’ll be glad to see him tonight. Bringing a care pkg from Mom who has to help her Mom move to an elder living community. Mom is real busy now.
