OK, someone must have cursed me this year, since every time I turn on the radio, I hear “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas” - now the first couple of times it brought back childhood memories since this song was on my long-lost Captain Kangaroo Christmas album, but it is starting to drive me nuts! That and the all-time worst song…

…that Christmas Shoes thing. I have to turn it off - anyone who has lost a loved one during this time of year knows how I feel, I want to nuke that song, just blow it into space, never to be heard again! And now I hear the same group has a new holiday song about someone with Alzheimers - PLEASE!!!

What other holiday songs drive you crazy???

Wow Rachacha! I absolutely hate that Christmas Shoes song. Every time it comes on I change the station. I usually love christmas music, but I’m beyond sick of it this year. It’s relentless.

On a different note, my little guy is in year two of learning to play clarinet. He can actually play songs this year and is practicing a handful for his Christmas concert for my mom. He got a Christmas song book and I mentioned to him that “Illl be home for Christmas” is my favorite because I played it constantly the year I was pregnant with D1. She was born just before Christmas and was pretty late. Being hormonal, I was sure she wouldn’t arrive in time for Christmas and played that song and bawled. She made it just in time! Anyway, my son has been secretly practicing to play that for me and he did over the weekend and it was beautiful. I will remember that absolutely always, and sitting and listening to him struggle and conquer Christmas songs has been a magical experience that has enriched me beyond any holiday gift ever could.

I must be fortunate because I don’t recognize either of these songs.

I was thinking that the malls I’ve visited this season have been more tasteful in their music, lower key, jazzier, not too much of the bright and loud stuff.

My all time least favorite Christmas song is probably “The Drummer Boy.”

Editing to add after seeing zoosermom’s post: I have a Christmas baby too, born the 22nd (except she is of course far from being a baby anymore).

I can’t stand “Chestnuts Roasting…” - dunno why, it just iritates me. We had a band concert last night at son’s high school and the first song the orchestra started with was this - my younger D and I looked at each other and grinned. :)

The other one I will automatically turn the station on. Don’t know the title but that one about the little girl who wants to buy her mother (?) new shoes. OMG, this is too sappy/over the top for me and downright makes me depressed!!!

I’ve not heard the Hippo song either (but I’d love to!) – I AM, however, getting mighty tired of hearing “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.” And will Santa Claus ever quit “Comin to Town” and finally just GET here??! Sheesh! ;-)

When I was in my teens, I was on a float in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade and that song was played continually for miles and miles and miles that morning.

The greatest song has to be Merry Christmas From the Family by Robert Earl Keen. If you haven’t heard it (it’s not new), go directly to itunes and buy it! I used it as the title of my Christmas letter this year. H and I saw Keen in concert a few weeks ago and the whole auditorium was on their collective feet singing it. It was hilarious.

zooser - I am reading your story, and “I’ll be Home…” just came on the radio…how cool!!

Now shifting gears to mention a song I LOVE - there is a song by Trisha Yearwood called “It Wasn’t His Child”, about things from Joseph’s perspective, now how many songs are about that?

UGH !!
" Grandma got Run over by a reindeer " is the worst.
I also can’t stand “Dominic the Donkey” ( never heard it before moving to NJ )
There is also a Christmas song by George Michael that ges on my nerves.
And Bruce Springsteen’s painful rendition of " Santa Claus is coming to town " gets old fast.
Most of the music I hear, I like though ;)

I came here to post about the Christmas Shoes song, thinking I would be so original in doing so, and there it is in the first post. Did you know that they made that song into a TV movie…?

Very cool!! That must be an omen for good holiday wishes.

Lje, I love Dominic the Donkey. My sister is a generation older than I am and we’re, to put it mildly, not ethnic in any way. I first heard that song when she was dating my BIL who is from Italy. In his way, he was sucking up to the baby sister and he used to make me giggle whenever that song came on the radio. As silly as it is, it has happy memories for me.

Little Drummer Boy is high on my list. My H hates the Chipmunks. Every year, his daughters (now in their late '30s) make a joke “robo-call” with Alvin singing “Christmas don’t be late.”

This song does it for me. I absolutely hate it and every remake. What makes me really crazy is when it comes on in the car I find myself singing along. Ugh.
