home / auto insurance comparison

We’re trying to cut expenses, and reviewing insurance needs / costs for home & auto. We’ve been with the same company for over 20 years (Safeco), and have had only a few minor claims. They have always been prompt, helpful, and no surprise rate increases. We are not unhappy with them, but simply comparing options. I called 3 other companies for quotes (USAA, Amica & State Auto). Both USAA & Amica were considerably higher for similar coverage. I was surprised but was told that when you have been with a company for so long, they can give you preferred rates. State Auto was only slightly less and not worth changing.

Then we called AAA insurance. Their rates were nearly $1000 less per year (combined home/auto)! We THINK the coverage is similar (if not slightly better). But, we’re concerned that “you get what you pay for”. Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) using AAA for their home / auto insurance?

It is our understanding AAA is not the underwriter. Auto insurance is from Western United Insurance Co. Home insurance is from ACA?

If you are in Texas, I can give you a resource to compare the homeowners policy.

I’ve been with AAA insurance for just over 10 years now in CA and am very happy with them. I really like how I can add and remove my two college kids from my auto policy as much as I want when they are on winter break, during the summer, Spring break, etc. Another thing worth mentioning- if you have an umbrella policy, I found their rates to be the lowest of anyone.

The quotes from our insurer and several others to add our teen girls ran $1000-1200 more than what we had been paying. So, we delayed their licenses.

Moving to AAA auto ins brought us in at slightly less than we had been paying- now, this included the girls and a second, pretty old car recently received from family. AND, I had an at-fault accident in the year before the switch, which we made clear to them. The girls get a discount for being in school more than 100 miles from home and we get discounts for paying 2x/year.

We then switched our homeowners to AAA and saved roughly $1000. No complaints. Both policies are through American Commerce (Ohio.) Amazing savings and every dealing with them has been professional and prompt.

We’ve been with AAA for 40 years. Yep, hard for me to believe.

No problems. I didn’t realize that the rates were so competitive, as we haven’t really shopped around. They will want you to become a member and pay the $40 per year membership fee if you haven’t already. All you have to do is use it once to make it worth the cost, however. One jump-started battery and you have your fee back.
I like the fact that both kids are members and have someone to call when they need roadside assistance. It gives me peace of mind.

I signed up for AAA a year or so ago so I could feel safer about my son having his car at school. Shortly after I signed up I got a call from a rep. with AAA asking if had any other insurance needs. I ended up switching my home and car insurance (I believe my actual policy is with Travelers) from State Farm and I saved over $500 per year!!! I recommend everyone check rates at least every few years.

Thanks all! Sounds very promising. CC is full of great advice…and might even help save us $$$! Well worth the cost ;-)
