Home decorating

I thought I would start a thread where we could ask for home decor suggestions.
I have a sitting area in my master bedroom. It faces a corner fireplace. I presently have a love seat, chair and ottoman. They look shabby and need replacing. I’m struggling if I should replace with same configuration or do something different.
I considered ordering a sofa from Restoration Hardware with my class action discount coupon but I’ve read poor reviews on the quality.
Anyone bought a good quality love seat lately. Also have a dog so I am somewhat fascinated by the indoor/outdoor fabrics that don’t feel like outdoor fabric.

How many people would use this area ever at one time? More than one? Would a couch get used (like would you want to lay down there? Or is a big comfy chair w/ottoman serve enough purpose of lounging and gazing at the fireplace??? What is the other decor in the room? Modern ? Traditional?

I have the 2nd picture on this page pinned on one of Pinterest boards as a sitting area idea for one end of my living room. I love the chairs and the multi-purpose ottoman or “coffee table”- I also like the pop of color in the piece in the back!

I’d think about how you use this room or would like to use the room. Since its part of your master, I assume its a more intimate space used by only you and your spouse. If it was me, I could imagine using it to read while relaxing by the fireplace which would probably lead to napping  so I might consider a chaise lounge of some type.

In November, we got a Dana sofa from Living Spaces. (It comes in a loveseat, chair and ottoman as well.) We have been happy with the firmness and quality, looks and fabric.

Two thumbs up for furniture that can be used to lounge and read! We used this loveseat in our sitting area:

It fits 2 adults and 3 cats comfortably, although the 3 cats prefer to have it to themselves.

My BIL recently got couches from Joybird. He bought a special cat resistant fabric and it’s working really well. They were comfy too, even the couch bed.

Three thumbs up if you can find a seating arrangement that doesn’t double as a clothing rack!

If it were me, I would get two chairs with ottomans.

In our MB sitting room we have a smaller scale wall hugger recliner in a corner and a chair similar to the one in abasket’s link. It is a sun fill room overlooking a lake, but the only time it gets used is if one of us cannot sleep and wants to read. Because of this I and glad I did not spend a fortune on the furniture.

To answer a few questions-
wood in room is waxed Irish pine, black iron bed frame and curtain rods. Big sliding door with wide wood light stained wood. The fireplace is a glazed plaster finish with inserted Mexican tiles. Room has high faulted ceiling with exposed wood beams. The present sofa sits facing the fireplace so it floats in the room. I have a large matching chair and ottoman I use as a coffee table. The present stuff is from Sofas U love and is sort of pottery barn style. The fabric is trashed.
The area is usually used by 1 or 2 people, I want to be able to put my feet up under me and get comfortable. Due to how the furniture floats in the room the back view is important. I’m not sure how 2 chairs or 2 chairs and ottomans will look. The back of the furniture also is in the path of the dark haired dog getting to our deck so it gets rubbed against.
Any thoughts on mixing leather and fabric?

Leather and fabric? Why not. We wear leather shoes and jackets with fabric outfits - the furniture can do this mixed look!

Thumper, that is the beauty of my Lunar Module Lounger - it does not have any armrests or backs usable for hanging clothes.

Greenwitch - your site is bookmarked! Thanks.

@BunsenBurner

You can pile clothes on anything!

No worry about piles of clothes on furniture. H is a take it off put it away person. I confine my piles to the shelves in the closet.
Tomorrow I’ll try to take a photo and switch out my avatar.

So do you like the current piece you have now other than it’s ‘trashed’? Is it a good piece of furniture that can just be recovered with a better grade of fabric or leather? I have a few pieces that I absolutely loved and were made very well, but I wanted a different look (fabric was dated), so I just had them recovered and they were like brand new pieces to me. You’d be surprised what a good fabricator can do.

I haven’t purchased any new sofas in recent years, but we have a sleep sofa in our sitting room and have used it over the years.

I need advice on cheap wall decor. What could I use in a living room/dining room that is contemporary/transitional in furnishings?

We have a beautiful leather chair in our Master bedroom that simply looks like a beautiful chair. But it’s also a recliner. I’d consider two of these, with small side table to set a drink on.

If that’s already been suggested, my apologies. I’ve been at work for several days and unable to catch up with every thread.

@toledo, do you have an “At Home” store near you? They have TONS of wall art. I bought two abstracts on canvas for practically nothing for D2’s little house, and people often ask her for the name of the artist.

I have this chair in my bedroom and I love it. I sit and read in it all the time.

Emilybee- I Like the chair but it won’t go with room.
I’ve changed my avatar and will leave it for a few days.
Nrdsb4a- I would consider 2 chairs. My concern is looks and also I use my ottoman as a coffee table and I keep a lot of “junk” on it. Computer, books, magazines etc. drives my H crazy.
Toledo- Home Goods has a lot of wall art. My D’s friend took wood squares and painted them and mounted them on her wall and filled them as if they were shelves.

Teriwtt- the furniture itself is in good condition. The problem that doesn’t show in the photo is that the sides of the cushions have turned pink. They were fine for the first 5 yrs of having the sofa. I’m convinced it has something to do with either the stuffing or the fabric that the inner cushion is made of. It isn’t just sun bleaching since it occurs on all sides of the cushion. My concern with recovering is spending all that money and having a similar problem. I also think the back cushions are overstuffed. I tried to get the company to give me some explanation but they were no help. I could order new silvers from them but I don’t want to give them the business.
D2 just moved into a small apartment so she will take the love seat. She has a dog who goes on the furniture so she doesn’t care about the discoloration plus the price is right.

Maybe I missed it…what is the purpose of the couch? Do you and H sit on it together? If it were me, I’d probably go for two deep armchairs side by side with ottomans.
