Home schooled student going to public school for senior year. Advice and extracurriculars?

I’ve been home schooled since elementary school, so I never got to play sports or join clubs. I just finished my first week of public school and I’m overwhelmed thinking about clubs and sports. I want to get involved. That’s one of the main reasons I decided to go to public school for senior year. To get the experience or sports and clubs and prom and graduation. But I know I only have one year. So what sports/clubs should I join? What would look best on college applications? There’s so much I’d like to try, but I know I don’t have time for it all. Volleyball, cheerleading, band, tennis, etc. Any advice?

You could email the coaches of a couple of sports to see if seniors with no previous experience with the sport are put on a team. If you don’t currently play an instrument, you would want to see if new players get instruction on their instrument or if it is assumed that they know how to play already. Perhaps a counselor at your school will have more specific information.

Don’t ever do something just for the application.

I say just do what you want to do. What did you do while you were in home school? If your school is big enough, any of your interests probably has a club designated for it. I don’t think we can advise you on a lot without knowing your school’s clubs/sports or your interests. Don’t try joining a lot of things - you won’t have time for homework/college apps. Join only the clubs you really are interested in so that you don’t have a huge work pile for yourself. Try to make your only year of high school count, all the while having time set aside for your college applications. I don’t know if doing any sports will be any good for you, since, from what you’ve said, you have no athletic experience and you’re a senior. Same goes for any arts you’re interested in.

Get involved in whatever interests you. This is an opportunity to engage with your school community. Make new friends. Take advantage of the things you couldn’t do when you were homeschooling. College will be another version of this; you’re getting a chance to show you can jump in with both feet!
