I’d say the only colleges you might not get into would be Harvard or Princeton. The others will almost definitely accept you, and you still have a good chance with those two because of your story. So, If your essays are as good as you say they are, the only schools you might have trouble with are Harvard and Princeton.
You are a pretty ambitious guy. Your story is compelling but your sub par stats are a hurdle to say the least. Some of this other feeback here is very optimistic if not utterly delusional. all the schools listed above are reaches for an 1840 some even more than that.
I got a 1880 first attempt and 2270 second, and didn’t make it to cornell ED. I am an african who has had to fight for everything I have and my story wasn’t enough everybody told me I was a sure sot but there is no such thing. I am only warning this user against getting your hopes up coz it sucks when they are just crushed again @BrownParent
First of all, I want to thank all of you so much he for taking the time to reply, I’ve been closely following this thread both obsessively and religiously. I appreciate every single comment from those who believe to those who have quite the harsher realistic approach, I am overwhelmed by the generosity!
Just wanted to post this update seeing how the scores just came out for the SAT I took. My score is now a 2170. Now this may not seem like much but I went from an 1840 to a 2170 with only a practice book and dedication, up 330 points. With these decisions, all I can say is that I gave it my best and that’s honestly the best I can hope for.
I also recently won a Scholastic Art Award for my photography: 1 Gold Key, 1 Silver Key for portfolio, and 1 Honorable Mention. Then for the essays I wrote for admissions I got Scholastic Writing Awards for each one: 4 Silver Keys and 4 American Voices recognitions. Should I update schools about this?

Pursue your passions. Unfortunately, the raw statistics are daunting - that’s the cruelty of these institutions - but true passions are never “generic super reaches.” If Harvard is one of those passions, not because it sounds cool or looks fancy, but because it’s Harvard, then apply as yourself, not as who some random username thinks you need to be. The internet wants to reduce you into a pile of numbers and acronyms so that it can dismiss your entire life with an admission rate.

Thank you for your interest in my admissions process! I really appreciate it. I will tag you two with the update so far but will wait until I have all decisions to tag everyone as I am still awaiting half of my decisions. I’ve only really gotten responses from my safeties. I also didn’t update the schools about the awards since they were only at a regional level and I didn’t get an answer as to whether I should update this since my counselor is brand new to highschool… Anyways, it’s too late now
Here’s how it’s playing out:
I’ve gotten accepted to 12:
UMiami with $84,000 Presidential Scholarship
UMinnesota with $20,000 Merit Award
UAlabama with $98,000 Merit Full Ride
UKentucky with $40,000 Merit Aid
UOregon with $40,000 Preside a Merit
UWashington Seattle
UPittsburgh
UC San Diego
UC Davis
Mississippi State University with $56,000 Merit
School of the Art in Chicago with $89,000 Merit
Duke University (Likely letter)
Wait listed at:
UChicago
And rejected from:
UTexas at Austin (???)
UCLA (I applied to the TFT film program that has an acceptance rate near ~3% so expected)
I have 14 decisions coming within the next week and a half. I’m taking the Duke likely letter and being wait listed at UChicago instead of being flat out rejected with hopes for next week.
You have a very good chance at every university you applied to. The homeless hook is a tremendous story, and while sad, it will still improve your chances of getting into all of those schools significantly. Your SAT is fine. You are very competitive and a stronger applicant than most. These schools are obviously super selective and weird, and any predictions would be useless; just know that you are qualified and you’ll likely get into the majority of them. All of the top 10 to 30 schools, youre in. The top 10 you’ll definitely get at least a couple. Good luck! You’ve overcome a lot, you should be proud.
As a Hispanic myself who applied to a lot of the same schools as you, I really hope we both get in. ESPECIALLY Harvard, which would be amazing. Hopefully we’ll be seeing each other there next year!
