Hi all.
Here’s my story.
I’m a singer songwriter signed to a record company.
I grew up traveling around the world singing with my family, and all I wanted to do was go to college.
I was homeschooled and have a GED.
I want to go to Columbia University.
Since it’s too late to apply to columbia this year, I could go to CUNY for a semester or so.
I’m wondering if you had any advice which CUNY college is the best for Creative Writing.
Also any tips on how to get into Columbia would help.
I have no credits or anything.

I doubt that you could get into Columbia after having taken such a long break from studying – here is what I would suggest:

Take some classes at a local community college; this will show admissions officers that you are able to reorient yourself to studying and such. It will also help you gather credits (and maybe letters of recommendation) without spending too much money.

Talk to some admissions officers at colleges you want to go to; even just talking to someone can go a long way in that it shows initiative. I’m sure most places will be understanding of your situation.

Take a look at the common application and work on essays. The academic component of your application probably won’t be substantial, so these could really help boost your chances of admission especially given that you plan to major in creative writing.

Once you’ve done that, I would suggest looking at CUNY schools. Hunter and Brooklyn are said to have excellent humanities programmes, although I think all of the CUNYs have creative writing majors. Columbia might be a better choice for grad school, if that’s where you’re headed.
