Homeschooler Interested in MT?

Hello, I am a 14 year old freshman, and I am also homeschooled. What can/should I do to prepare for minoring in MT at college? Any tips, advice, ideas, ect., are appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Well, the fact that you are homeschooled will be important to some of the schools you are interested in attending so I would go on their websites NOW and see if there are any additional criteria they impose on homeschoolers seeking admission. You may need to submit a portfolio of your work or you may need to take specific SAT II tests. You may be subject to higher SAT/ACT score requirements. The more you know in advance the better prepared you will be. I would plan as though you aer definitely giong to apply to the school with the most stringent admission requirements, that way you will be prepared no matter where you end up applying.

Most minor programs don’t require an audition, although there may be a few that do. In fact, most schools don’t specifically have a minor in MT. It would likely be theatre, dance or voice.

In case you change your mind between now and the time you apply and decide to major in MT at a program that requires an audition, you should be getting the best and most training you can, especially in voice and dance. Is there a community or Youth Theatre group you are or can be affiliated with? That might help.

It’s great that you are exploring all of your options now as a Freshman, rather than waiting until you are a Senior and it’s too late to make any changes!

Thank you! I am specifically interested in USC, who do have a minor in musical theater.

Hey! Great question! Tracy makes some good points about researching potential schools regarding their requirements for homeschoolers. The good news is, universities are much better prepared to deal with homeschoolers today than even just a few years ago. I can recommend a great counselor who has helped several homeschoolers get ready for college. Feel free to message me.

My oldest daughter decided to homeschool primarily to be better prepared for college level auditions. She was spending so much time on homework that one by one, she was having to reduce her theatre training (voice, dance, acting) to practically nothing. We run into quite a few homeschoolers in the theatre world. The schedule is just better when there is flexibility.

So, in a nutshell, train, do shows and have fun! Plus, keep an eye on which schools you want to attend in order to meet their academics!

I wish you well on your journey!

My home-schooled D did pretty well on the audition circuit. Make sure you get very involved in theatre in your city and/or in summer programs somewhere so you have good items on your resume, and so you meet folks who can give you great artistic recommendations. Do what you must do to have super SAT and/or ACT scores. Start thinking about who can give you educational references, outside of your immediate family (my D took community college classes and the profs wrote her rec’s). My D’s only “hole” in her college aps was in the “leadership” category, because she lived in the ballet studio. Best wishes.
