homosexuality- born that way or choose to be that way?

Thank you :D

Thanks aristotle, I’ve been trying to figure that one out :)

i think it is funny how most straight people think that homosexuals choose their “ways” without even talking to a homosexual themselves.

Sheed~ i was not calling YOU a homophobe, was i? but if the shoe fits…why are you so defensive? i do keep coming back because i’m amazed by the ignorance here. CC is a very high-end, TOO high sometimes place, and i guess i assumed kids on here would have long since gotten the gay thing. you all can indulge in this debate, but what i’m trying to say is , there really isn’t one. educated people, kids and adults alike know people don’t choose this difficult lifestyle. it’s a part of them as heterosexuality is to someone else. why in god’s name does anyone have the right or arrogance to judge that? to janetlover’s post~ i don’t know any straight people who think gays choose their style. i think i don’t know anyone, in this enlightened time of ours who thinks so. but i guess you all enjoy the controversy here, so have fun. as i said earlier, there is no controversy. live and let live. there are kids and adults being killed for being homosexual. some of the posters on this thread help me, sadly see why. best to all of you who are courageous in your ability to ward them off.

That people are being killed for being homosexual (an iffy characterization in itself, but whatever; I think you’re slightly exaggerating the difficulties homosexuals face in the 21st century, at least in America) in no way implies that homosexuality is an innate characteristic. Jews were once (and in some places still are) persecuted and killed for their beliefs. But often the opportunity existed for them to change their beliefs and to assimilate into broader society (19th and early-20th century Germany provides a good example). Yet their ideals were so important to them that they braved potential (even likely) harassment and persecution and marginalization to stay faithful.

Again, I agree that homosexuality is probably an innate characteristic, but yours is a bad argument. I’ve got to attack weak argumentation wherever it stands. (Well, to be honest, I’m doing this mainly to prevent Sheed from reposting huge blocks of text again)

Either you’re overly optimistic about the current state of society or you’ve never been to the South.

I learned from the creationist thread that you can never underestimate the extent to which a particular conviction or worldview (usually of the religious nature) makes otherwise-intelligent people believe the most idiotic, ridiculous nonsense.

forsees influx of homosexuality at competitive HS

I’m not sure if this description is entirely accurate for a few select individuals.

good point, caressemh! i guess i AM an optimist and i DON’T come from the south. speaking of which…i bet there’s a real correlation here for geography and beliefs… i’m from the northeast and work in the field of mental health and have homosexual patients who see me NOT FOR THEIR HOMOSEXUALITY, but for all the regular things we all face. maybe this helps with where i’m “coming from”.

^ Definitely. I live in Tennessee.; it’s a whole different story. It’s a strange paradox of kind, outgoing people who nonetheless maintain very closed-minded social views. It’s deplorable but at the same time it’s just a reflection of the environment one grows up in.

*I’m not saying racism or homophobia is excusable! But I often wonder if I had lived here all my life, or if my parents had raised me differently, If I would also harbor such discrimination. I hope not.

sounds like your parents did a good job! :)

hey caressemh we are neighbors! i am from kentucky and you wouldnt believe some of the things that people still believe about blacks (and now hispanics). i have had so many racist remarks thrown at me just from being in a predominately white area at the wrong time. it seems that states in the south tend to always be a step behind the northern states when it comes to acceptance.

if racial tensions are still kinda bad what is there to expect from people when it comes to homosexuality? they wont even allow us to create a gay straight alliance club within our school (one of the top school in the state) yet we have other clubs such as students against drunk driving…

people are so close minded here it isn’t even funny.

Yep I am grateful to them. We differ on some issues - my mom still considers homosexuality a choice.

Hey neighbor  Yeah you don’t have to tell me about it I hear it daily too. But as flawed as the south is I am going to miss it if/when I go up north to college (hopefully Baltimore! That’s part of the north… right?)

you say you’re a Christian? (you just threw out all your credibility on that one)

HAPPYCOLLEGEMOM:
i do keep coming back because i’m amazed by the ignorance here. … best to all of you who are courageous in your ability to ward them off.

First off, apparently, kids on CC are not very high, because they apparently think being gay is biological. Who are you to say that there’s not really a debate in this? It’s mothers like you who tell their children to support homosexuality, resulting in kids who don’t know any better. Even if you support homosexuality, at least don’t make your kid make the wrong choice. GIVE him/her the chance to choose whether it’s a chocie or biological…

Courageous enough to ward them off. Yea right, it’s so courageous to voice your opinion that homosexuality is biological. WHAT amazes me with this thread is that people don’t read all the evidence. they just believe it’s biological without ever in thier lives being religious or trying to see a different way. People are becoming more and more corrupt and evil. They lack religion, they lack morals, they lack values, they fail to see being gay is NOT biological…

At the end of the 1960s, there was a counterculture. People were disillisioned by the discovery that society was not free more racism, imperialism, oppression, and what not. At this point, a sharp increase in homosexuals arose. Now, you can be stupid and argue that homosexuals NATURALLY went up at that time or the outside factors which were making the youth rebel against authority and traditional values made them CHOOSE TO BE GAY.

PEOPLE posting on this thread need to really reexamine their values. Obviously, they lack values whatsoever. So better yet, they need to get some values and alter their inaccurate perspective…

LASTLY, WHAT IS FUNNY IS THAT PEOPLE NEVER RESPOND TO THE PART OF THE POST THAT IS IMPORTANT. THEY GO OFF IN TANGENTS IN SMALL, TINY DETAILS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT EXPLAIN OR RESPOND TO THE TRUTH. GOOD ONE GUYS, ESPECIALLY, THE JACK DUDE WHO TOTALLY WENT AGAINST HIMSELF AND FAILED TO RESPOND TO MY POST. REAL SMOOTH. JUST SHOWS THAT YOU’RE ALL HYPOCRITICAL AND NOT ONLY FAIL TO SEE THE TRRUTH, BUT DON’T WANT TO SEE THE TRUTH.

DISCLAIMER: I have not read anything prior to this. There is 14 pages - please excuse me if I don’t use up precious time to read the first 14 pages. Thanks. ;)

Why shouldn’t we support homosexuals? Should we shun them for who they are? Do parents generally give their children the option to be racist? So why should they give them to option to be prejudice against homosexuals.

The two (being religious and believing homosexuality is biological) are not mutually exclusive.

Last I checked, Jesus preached tolerance and love, not hatred, bitterness, and arrogance.

[citation needed]. Further, you will NEVER find a citation for this. You may find citations that talk about the number of people openly gay but you can never control what people reveal - or don’t.

And apparently is still not - just look at you!

You know, I CANNOT wait to see the day whenever someone asks the question: Heterosexuality-born that way or choose to be that way?

(no offense to the op lol.)

I mean…I am a gay male, but I never “chose” to be. I just kind of…discovered/new at an early age but of course had to supress it for awhile there b/c of society. And then once the feelings grew stronger I was like ok why am I hiding it and so yeah. haha.

PS: For all the religious fanatics and homophobes on this board, seriously…Why? I don’t get it. I have contemplated being “heterophobic” to show what it’s like for us and others, but against the straight community (of course just as a mockery of homophobia.) It’s all just ridiculous! It’s basically, in essence, like racism, sexism, etc. It’s a civil rights movement not yet addressed, or rather, not yet solved. This issue might take a sh**load longer than the black civil rights movement, but that was definitely one step in the right direction.

The world needs to seriously change…actually, no, society in the US is just corrupt!!! I was reading that in places like Taiwan they actually teach about homosexuality in elementary school, and about adoption, etc. WHY can’t America be that free? And Asia is not a socially liberal place if I were to stereotype it (according to my friends over there.)
