homosexuality- born that way or choose to be that way?

“homosexuality – born that way or choose to be that way?”

er, aside from the point that it should be “homosexual(s),” I believe they choose to be that way. however, I also believe that people are born without perception to heterosexuality or homosexuality, and that they, in the vaguest sense of the word, are ambisexual, and are attracted to a person, rather than a sex. societal pressures pushes them this way or that.

altaJHMC- very well put

alh- well i think that in all seriousness some people would abstain from having children. that is like if there was a screening (i dont know if there already is) to see if your child will have some type of mental disability most would choose not to have the child.

taggart- i like the way you think. i have never heard that side before and i do believe that some people are truly like that but society forces them to label (i truly hate labels) themselves gay/bisexual if they are in a relationship with a member of the same sex. if we lived in a label free world everything would be much easier.

janetlover, aplogies in advance -but do I understand correctly that you don’t know that prenatal testing for some mental and physical disabilities is available and widespread? I don’t mean that to be an offensive question. You seem very intelligent. I guess I don’t know where young people, especially young women, are supposed to get that information.

wow…already on the 7th page…this thread has gone waaay farther than I imagined.

well sheed, technically it depends on your settings because it’s really 17 pages (under CC default settings). So yeah count by posts.

well 246 (including this one) is still a lot…

40 posts per page FTW.

Baller4lyfe (post #210):

“And second, go to a gay bar and ask how many guys had loving relationships with their dads, or had a lot of close guy friends in school and bonded closely with them.”

Are you serious?
I’m gay. I have always had a great relationship with my dad (and my brother). He was always involved in whatever sports I played, my music lessons, and general family activities. More than half of my close friends for pretty much my entire life have been male. Most of my boyfriends had similar childhoods. You clearly need to get to know some gay people before you start throwing out stuff like that.

I firmly believe that it’s biological (no, no one has isolated one specific gene, but I don’t believe that anyone has isolated the specific genes for common traits, such as height, that we can all agree are largely genetic or biological.) but I don’t really see why this debate should matter. Aside from its offense to the close-minded, I can’t figure out what harm homosexuality does. We’re contributing members to society. True, reproduction between two gay males is not possible and between lesbians requires fertilization, but I don’t see a failure to continue to populate our already over-populated Earth as a reason to have a problem with homosexuals.

i can’t readily believe that all homosexuals choose their sexual preference. i mean, why would people put themselves through all that pain and then wish that they weren’t that way (some people, not all).

alh- no offense taken. i know that there probably is but i didnt want to say that there was and get a ton of post from people slamming me (because thats what they do- pick out one little incorrect aspect of your post that doesnt have much to do with the topic and respond to that). i just wanted to be on the safe side.

cookiemon…don’t got there…pleaaassseee don’t go there…

why not. ???

Because we’ve talked about that at least 7 different times! (the second sentence)

For those of you who think it’s a choice: Why don’t you go ask a homosexual?

I don’t believe that a devout Christian would choose to be gay so that he/she can go through decades of social rejection, painful guilt, and ultimately commit suicide. But, there are people who are born into devout Muslim, Catholic, Pentacostal, and even Mormon families who turn out to be homosexual. Many of them also attempt to be straight because that is supposedly the right thing to do.

“Oh lord, please stop me from committing this horrible sin.” Hilarious, one of the most ironic situations I’ve ever heard of in my entire life.

Do most of them succeed in turning straight? Of course not! How can they?

Since it’s a choice, can I suddenly force myself to like males? Hell, no! How could I? If I’m not gay; how can I suddenly deceive myself into thinking that I am and then just go and enjoy having sex with members of the same sex? That’s absolutely ridiculous!

Just forget about the fact that you’re homophobic for one minute and use your ****in logic.

butterbattle, why does someone have to be homophobic to believe it’s a choice?

“Attraction” is inherently automatic. Think magnets-- it’s not a “choice”.

Okay, fine they don’t have to be homophobic. They can also be

1) Brainwashed in some religion.
2) Stupid.
3) Uninformed.

Sheed30: Were you born heterosexual or did you choose to be?

Did you wake one day in elementary school one day and go, “hmmmmm, should I go f*** boys or girls?”

I’m agnostic, but I’ve read the bible, and I can’t seem to find the chapter where it says all homosexuals are going to hell. Could you please point it out for me?

Now, for those of you who make the argument, “It’s Adam and Steve, not Adam and Steve.” Shut the **** up! That doesn’t prove anything.

I can just as effectively make the argument that men are superior to women because women came from men’s ribs and not the other way around. I can also make the argument that all Jews are going to hell because they betrayed God.

If the bible is true, God would not leave this topic up to debate. He would tell us, but he didn’t. So, all you homophobes have to rely on is the fact that the first two humans were male and female. Yeah, you can argue that it implies that homosexuality is wrong, but that means that it’s subjective. It’s not real evidence, it’s a barely supportable interpretation.

If you went to some country in Africa and saw people eating monkey brains, you’d probably think that’s disgusting and weird. Why? Because you don’t like it and because most people don’t eat monkey brains. So, now, you think there’s something wrong with the people who eat monkey brains. In fact, the less you like monkey brains and the smaller the minority who actually eat monkey brains, the more unacceptable the practice would be.

“Perhaps a lunatic is just a minority of one.” George Orwell

In a communist country, a person who wants freedom of expression and speaks out against the government is a minority and is thrown in jail. In a Catholic church in the 1600s, if you try to spread views that contradict the the teachings of the church, you’re a heretic and you’ll be forced to repent and then be hanged or stoned or burned, etc.

It just comes down to the power of the majority vs. the rights of the minority. America probably has the best system in the world to accomodate this. Yet, currently, gays constitute a group that is still misunderstood, hated, and uncommon enough to allow a bitter fight to continue.

ummm…read the thread…food analogy

no-one’s bringing that up…and if they are , no one’s listening to them…

I think it’s a mixture of both, i’m not gay myself so i couldn’t say. I’m guessing it’s a mixture of genes and how you were raised.
That being said, i have no problem with them, only the over the top ones, who i want to punch in the face badly. I won’t make fun of them for it, but i wouldn’t want to be around one. I’d feel uncofmortable.

aren’t we all a little gay?

^^ Haha, I like you.

How’s Michigan?
