Honda Odyssey van-local teen crushed by seat

This story is just heartbreaking. I have cried my eyes out.

These freak stories are so unnerving.

I heard the 911 calls and it was so upsetting. How did this happen? The kid called on the voice activated system so why couldn’t 911 track him. I have a Honda Odyssey (which was creamed by a deer this week) and just can’t figure out this could happen.

It sounds like a bunch of mistakes were made. When he called the second time he relayed the type of car, color etc but this was not delayed the cops. It’s so sad because the school is not very large, it’s a private day school so there’s not a bunch of huge parking lots to search. The story is so heartbreaking.

I have that van and I am having a hard time figuring out how that happened. He must have been a pretty small-framed kid, because if he was trapped in the back well where the seat goes, I can’t imagine how or why he would have gotten his whole body in there without the back hatch being open. Or maybe he was in the middle of the car reaching under the seat and it collapsed on his chest? I don’t know.

There’s no way I could listen to those phone calls. I’m already so haunted by this story. That poor child. I can’t imagine what his parents are going through right now.

@Trixy34 If you click on the first link that on my post, there is a video simulation of what happened. It’s still hard to believe.

Thanks - yeah, I saw it after I wrote that. Makes sense. But you would think that would have made him more noticeable. So heartbreaking

This is not just on the 911 operator… A minivan is by definition a kidmobile. Could not the ones who designed it figure out that a child can get wedged in and trapped by what sounds like a badly designed seat?!

I used to drive carpools of athletes. Kids got their stuff out of the back just like that…

It’s heartbreaking. It’s so easy to imagine our kids doing the same thing.

This is unbearable. That poor family. I have an old Odyssey and I’d never considered that the seat could give way and flip back with weight put on it.

It is unbearable. His dad found him…I can only imagine the horror. It makes me want to cry.

We had that van and my S plays tennis and lives in Cincinnati. I can totally picture him leaning back to get his tennis stuff. How horrible.

Horrible. May he rest in peace. Prayers for the family.

It is incredibly sad. I cannot imagine how the police couldn’t find this car. Where we live it was reported that there was a recall on that mini van due to second seat collapsing. If you own this van you might want to check it out.

10 years ago, a young woman was murdered in Madison, in her home downtown, in the middle of the day. She called 911 and the response was botched. The murderer has not been found. I understand how demanding and stressful emergency response center jobs are, but I also think situations like these are inexcusable.

The recall is for the second row (directly behind driver).

We had an Odyssey from 2003-2010. I loved the car, but I remember how heavy that 3rd row seat was. It is chilling to think what terrible thing could have happened.

The call center knew the calling number. Should the police be able to track phone location via GPS?

They could probably track it down to the parking lot, but not to the precise location of the car - so if the cops were not given the make and model of the car…

:frowning:

If they could track down to the parking lot then they could use the PA to call the car owners to come out to help them identifying the car with the boy inside.
