Honor Program at Community College

Can you join the honors program your second year of community college without taking it the first year? I hear that if you join the honors program, you are guaranteed a spot at a UC when you transfer. Is this true?

yes you can, different CC’s have different scholars program. for example one CC may require you to take a series of courses, no application or essay needed.
Another CC may require you to apply and be approved via an essay, and other things.

Talk to your counselor.

No, scholars doesnt guarantee anything. Possibly may give priority consideratio to the school you are applying to for specific majors. Ex: Ucla, only college of letters and science majors are given priority consideration if they complete scholars program.

You can join anytime you want. But usually there is stipulations like currently enrolled in an honor course or something along those lines. Also make sure you will be in your college long enough to even finish the program. Just make sure to look up your school’s requirements of finishing the honors program. This will let you know how long it will take to complete the program.

There is such thing as a Transfer guarantee but not all the UCs participate, like UCLA, UCB, and UCSD next semester or year I forget. To get the guarantee you usually just follow your school’s requirements for finishing the honors program and any extra things each UC wants you to complete(maintain a certain GPA, finishing a certain number of honor courses, take a certain number of school seminars, etc.).

Nope. There is a TAG program at the UCs that guarantees admission, available for most UC campuses. You can only apply it towards one campus (I believe this rule is now in effect, not sure). It does not require being in the honors program. Details vary slightly between UC campuses, so look them up at the campus you are considering. Here, for example, is the link at Irvine [Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/admissions/tag.html)

If you are interested in TAG be sure to read thru the specifics at each UC before you choose a campus. Unfortunately the programs have small but important differences. Some guarantee admission but not your major, some don’t offer TAG for all majors, etc.

For Cal and UCLA there is a related program called TAP in which you take honors courses at your CC and receive priority (but no guarantee) in admission. This is available only at some CC’s.
