Honor societies

Daughter made 3.69 in first q out of ucla and has been invited to join the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta sigma. They are 2 National Honor societies? Can anyone tell me anythng about these. Will these help down the road for Medical school? She is trying to decide what to do for next year. Right now she is in AAP Scholoars and a Plus program. She is considering honors but does not want to be over committed.

thanks

ALD&PES are the same thing. It’s a co-ed honor society.

AAP Scholars and PLUS are not very selective - they do provide a lot of support.

1) probably will not help for medical school
2) honors is something she should join, just to get priority enrollment for a year. Lower divs (especially premed prereqs) are VERY tough to get.

As far as I know, ALD and PES are honors societies, and NOT the same thing as completing the college honors program…my apologies to the OP if you already knew, but I wasn’t sure if you did.

As for college honors, I agree with bruinboy. Even if your daughter can’t complete the requirements, they don’t check until the end of the year, and she’ll get priority enrollment for the year.

honors doesn’t add any extra time, really… depends how you get your 8 units a year. you can get honors units with the classes you’re already taking. if she’s in a GE cluster, she can get honors with a B or better (and units do count retroactively).
you won’t have to add too many classes to fulfill honors, and those you do add, are entirely worth it! (i’m speaking specifically of honors collegium classes, which have been 2 of the most memorable classes i’ve ever taken).
and priority is a WONDERFUL thing to have. okay so it isn’t perfect since so many people have it, but if you don’t have it, you’re almost at a disadvantage. so consider honors!
