Honors and Scholars

My D is in Honors program. She signed up for “Honors college” program, probably for housing? Meanwhile, there is a scholars program called “International studies” that she is very interested. Does anybody know if a student can be in honors program, and at the same time involved in IS scholars program? or take courses related to international studies? Thanks.

Honors and Scholars are mutually exclusive. You can be in one or the other, but not both. According to the following link, the “International Studies” courses are restricted to students in that program. The same is true for Honors courses, they are restricted to Honors students

@maxwellequations If your daughter is really interested in the scholars program then I would call UMD and see if she can be part of that program. Generally I think the assumption is that based on the application kids are put into Honors with slightly higher stats but the reality is once you get to UMD it is all about taking classes that you have a passion for. If your daughter is excited about taking the smaller Honors courses (especially the seminars) then I would consider sticking with honors. If you go onto Testudo (just google Testudo to bring up the Maryland site) and look at class schedule (big button in middle of the page) your daughter can see what is offered this spring for honors and what will be offered next fall. She can also see what is offered for the particular scholars program. That might give her a better idea of where she would prefer to be.
