Honors Chem vs. AP Chemistry

My DS will be taking Honors Chem this fall. The school doesn’t offer an AP Chemistry class. Is it possible for him to take the AP exam and do well, if he only has the honors class this year? Should he get an AP book and self-study along with his course during the year? We’ve heard the chemistry teacher is very good, as is the class.
A related question - would he be prepared to that the SAT subject test in Chemistry after this Honors course?

If he wants to take the exam, then yes, he should definitely self study along with his honors course.

If the chemistry teacher is as good as you say he is, then yes, your son will be prepared for the SAT subj. test.

From my own experience with an honors chemistry course, your son will have to really study up on electrochemistry and reaction rates. Make sure he knows the math (just look at old AP problems). I would recommend he buy an AP review book and see whether or not he understands the topics, and, in the case that he doesn’t, get an actual textbook.

Make sure the chem teacher is good because it’s definitely not an easy exam without properly gained knowledge. Other than that, make sure he self-studies heavily along with his schoolwork and he should be good to go.

Self study.
