I’m going to 9th grade next year an unfortunately I played around in 7th grade and went from algebra 1, and algebra 1 again in 8th grade, but 8th grade is almost over and I’m wondering what your opinion is on taking algebra 1a in 9th grade… Also if I’m taking all regular classes 9th grade, Also is it possible to take honors classes in 10th grade regarding my situation if so how? Thanks in advance for all your replies and advice
You will need to talk to your HS guidance counselor next year to get the answers to your questions.
Algebra 1 in 9 th grade is the standard path at my kids high school for the majority of kids. There is nothing shameful about it.
When writing the math standards as part of the Common Core, one of the conclusions of the experts was that Algebra 1 in 9th grade should be viewed as the new norm. Before that, many school districts were trying to get most students into Algebra by 8th grade, but many experts have concluded that some students are not ready for it then. It is good to really understand algebra, so taking it again might be a good idea for you.
Algebra 1 in 9th grade was the old norm when I was in high school. College-bound students were expected to complete up to precalculus and trigonometry in 12th grade, so that they would be ready for calculus when they enter college. Good-at-math students were a year advanced, taking algebra 1 in 8th grade leading to calculus in 12th grade as a bonus to get a head start on college level math. Occasional (one every few years) students taking algebra 1 in 7th grade and calculus in 11th grade were seen as top students in math.
This is not exactly true…Common Core is doing MORE algebra in middle school, but it is called “8th Grade Math.” Topics you would traditionally associate with Algebra 1 (sets of inequalities, graphing, functions) are now the PREREQUISITES of Algebra 1 in the 9th grade. The CC Algebra 1 course requires a much more mature understanding of the mathematics, such that it can be applied to real world scenarios. Throughout academia, basic algebra is now considered a middle-school subject.
why would you want to take algebra 1 for the 3rd time?
You should move on to geometry. Algebra for 3 years must be really boring.
What grade are you getting in 8th grade algebra?
Hi,
On my 19th birthday I had the knowledge of a fifth grader (teacher’s assesment). I spent 8 hours per day studying math, english, and various sciences. I am 20 years old now and have completed a pre-calculus course and taken the SAT math level 2 to score a 670. It is never too late. You need a good teacher and a determination and willingness to learn. You’ll be caught up in no time.
I see 3 paths over the next 4 years:
- Take Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-calc
- Move on to Alg 2 or Geometry, then take Geo/Ang 2, then Pre calc, Calc
- Take Algebra 1, Double up on Geo and Alg 2, then Pre calc, Calc
To give yourself the most options I woudl try to take Calculus by senior year.
I would take the opportunity to work hard in your CP classes this year so you get take some honors next year.
Take the sequence of math your guidance counselor recommends. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Work hard and do your best–and good luck!!
If I understand correctly, OP has taken Algebra 1 in the 7th grade and failed, then retook Algebra1 this year in the 8th grade. We need to know what his/her grade is. Hopefully after two years of Algebra 1 OP doesn’t need to take it a third time.
In addition, the sequence is: Algebra1A, Algebra1B, Short Geometry, Short Algebra2/Quantitative reasoning, or could be Algebra1A, Algebra1B, Geometry1A, Geometry 1B/Quantitative Reasoning (for kids with an IEP). The 1A/1B sequence covers a unit of content over two years, which allows for a lot of drills and repetition.
A student would be placed in it due to remedial math placement in middle school.
If OP took Algebra in the 7th grade (ie., 2 years advanced), such a placement as a slow math sequence doesn’t seem appropriate.
OP, is that a recommendation by the Middle School GC? The High School GC? Your own personal question?
I never quit. I’ll be sure to do that in 9th grade
@101Dav move on to geo, 4 years in algebra sounds like a waste of time even if you’re bad at math.
