Honors classes

I keep hearing about honors classes, but after a brief search on the Penn website I still have no idea what they are and how to sign up for them. Can anyone help?

Penn’s main site sucks. Go to the department websites (which also suck visually, but more informative overall) and check out their courses. You can also refer to your handbook, which has all the courses currently being offered.

There are BFS honors courses you can look up on the College website. There are also JWS honors courses for Wharton. In general honors courses go more in depth and have tougher material than non honors courses, but an easier curve.

They’re also very few in number, so don’t stress out if you’re not finding any.

during advance registration if you are a BFS and you applied for a BFS seminar do you get some sort of priority from the computer?

we were sent a freshman course catalog, how is an Honors class identified in it? Are only BFS and JWS classes the Honors classes?

Thanks.

There are honors courses outside of BFS and JWS. You don’t have to be any special program to take an honors course. You can go on the college website to see BFS courses. Generally the section number for a non honors course will be something like 00x and the section for an honors course will be 30x. Some departments like economics and math also have honors courses (math 116, econ 1 honors recitation, chem 15, physics 170). I wouldn’t recommend chem 15 or physics 170 unless you had a really good high school preparation of if you’re Vagelos.

That said, what are some benefits to taking honors classes?
