What type of extra work is required for an honors class or honors section of a large lecture class? Has anyone taken THE2000 : Honors Intro to Theatre or PSB2000 : Honors Intro to Brain and Behavior?

How time consuming are the Honors Colloquium writing assignments? This is posted on the course section detail:

Each fall faculty from across the academic and creative arts spectrum explore “Art and Inquiry in the Modern University” with entering honors students. Discussions follow each weekly presentation. Students are required to write responses totaling two thousand (2,000) words.

I have taken Intro to Theatre Honors and it was my favorite honors class so far. The Honors section is taught by Dr. Osborne herself, with the 5 or 6 Graduate Students that teach the regular sections observing. From what I gathered, the workload for Honors was exactly the same as the regular sections. The only difference is that the Honors students had a different essay topic for one of the papers. There is a good amount of work required in the class but it is very easy and the material is not too challenging. Lots of extra credit is offered as well. Group work/participation is a large component of the class and class meetings were discussion based. You really get to know the people in your class which is a great benefit of taking honors classes.

I also took Brain and Behavior but the non honors section. The honors section actually meets with the regular sections so the class size is large, but very manageable. The only additional work required for the honors section was a 2-3 page paper I believe.

I would say that 2000 words for Colloquium is a bit of an overstatement. For my colloquium last year, all we had to do was write one question or comment about the lecture. They could be as short as a couple of sentences but this could be different for the upcoming year.

Thank you for the information Molly! I have to choose between those two classes, and I can’t decide which one to take. The theatre class only meets once a week (for an hour and fifteen minutes); are there other required activities that take up a lot of time? The B&B class meets three times a week for a total of two and a half hours, yet both courses are three credits.

Did you use the same DVD and book in your theatre class that are required this fall: DVD - Shakespeare Behind Bars - Directed by Hank Rogerson and The Norton Anthology of Drama, shorter edition?

What other honors classes have you taken? What are your comments about them?

The Theatre class is a hybrid class meaning you have class once a week and have to complete an online component instead of meeting in class for a second day. In class you usually take a short quiz, review the material and play of the week, and participate in discussion and other in class activities. The online component is an online lecture with pictures, audio, and video clips that teach the material. It takes about an hour to complete but you can do it whenever you want. In addition to the online lecture, most weeks you have to read a play out of the Anthology that ties in with weekly lecture. There are also additional assignments such as papers and projects but these are not due every week. Do not buy Shakespeare Behind Bars. It is required viewing, but you can find it on youtube for free or download it from Amazon for $2. In trying to choose between these two classes I would recommend choosing based on your interest level. If you do not like theatre, you will not enjoy this class or the workload associated with it. This is probably my favorite Honors class Ive taken because I love the subject matter. Feel free to PM me if you want more information.

Heres a quick summery of the other Honors classes Ive taken
ENC 1122 Honors Freshmen English: This class can be used in place of ENC 1102. It was taught by Andrew McFeaters who is a very nice, laid back guy. The class is discussion based and consists of reading one novel and writing 3 papers. Very basic English class but you really get to know the people in your class.
PHY1075c Physics of Light and Sound: This was a 4 credit Physics with lab class. It is required for film and some music students but there is a small honor section that meets with the class. The only difference in the workload was that the Honors students had to complete a group project that everyone else could do for extra credit. I would not recommend this class unless you like teaching yourself physics, are an expert in physics, or are required to take this. The main reason why I would not recommend this class is Professor Van Winkle. Hes a nice guy but an ineffective teacher in my opinon.
ECO 2023 Macroeconomics: I took this with Holcombe and she is a really great teacher. The difference between her regular and honors classes is that the regular section has multiple choice tests and her honors classes have essay tests, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how well you know economics.
Hope this helps.
