Honors College Admissions Essay Help

im intrested in attending Barret honors college at ASU. Any advice from those who have gone to Barret or any one attending an honrs college.
The prompts for the 2011 year are as follows:

1Describe your most significant academic achievement or intellectual endeavor. Highlight how it will influence your undergraduate education or goals for the future.

2 Barrett is composed of students from diverse backgrounds with distinctive life experiences. Explain how your cultural traditions (national, ethnic, religious, or other facets of your background) shape your view of the world around you.

These are pretty standard prompts. I cancelled my honors application to UW after I got into my top school early, but I still wrote the essays and submitted them, and the prompts were very similar.

You don’t want to just brag about some great award or something. Take an event (even if it was one in which you failed/showed shortcomings) and write about the impact on you. The effect is more important than the event. I wrote about chess for mine.

If you’re like me and are a typical white American who has little diversity then this one might be difficult. I ended up writing about my Italian grandparents and their bizarre quirks (washing my clothes from my suitcase when I was away visiting them without telling me first etc.).

Just my humble opinion, but you want essays that aren’t dull and stereotypical. The most important part is how it affected you. But also having an interesting topic/story couldn’t hurt.

thanks for the reply. I havedone sme fairly unique EC’s i mentored 0ver 13 students during my time in hogh school. I won the award for leader of the yyear of my school. i also attended diversity and leadership camps. depending on your view these may be seen as run of the mill. how were your EC’s

My ECs were kinda the biggest part of my app. For the school I got into, my gpa (3.9) was about average but my test scores were below the needed 2250.

My ECs:
Music: Won district solo competition, won district ensemble competition, all-state/all region honor groups since freshman year, co-principal in the top youth symphony in the state, taught free lessons to underprivileged kids, section leader in concert band/jazz band/marching band, lead player in my jazz band that won 2/3 of the major competitions last year, lots of in band awards (“Best Junior” “best sophomore” “best musician” “most outstanding”…) etc.

Sports: 4 years varsity chess, 3 years teaching chess at an elementary school. 1st degree black belt (passed the test with the highest score).

Im also in NHS and do some more ECs, but those are the biggies. I thought I had some good ECs, but it may seem like too many to some schools.

Are you currently in the honors program. how is it? as a whole does being in honor help with employers?

I’m not. I applied to one school honors but withdrew my application because I got into my top choice school (which was more of a reach than honors and also the school I most wanted to get into). The school I was accepted to doesn’t offer honors.

But, one of my good friends is in an honors program. He absolutely loves it. More class availability, a more challenging environment, and better dorms. A lot of the classes are more rigorous and also smaller in class size. I’m not sure how much it helps with employers, I’d assume that it looks better on paper than a regular/non honors from the same college.

right are you attending a performing arts school

Nope, I’m a senior in hs. Going to Stanford next year. I plan to play at least a bit in school though.

im intrested in stanford what is the financial Aid like there

Depends on your family income. Less than 60k means you pay virtually nothing (no room and board, no tuition). Less than 100k means you pay no tuition. Ive got a call with the financial aid office scheduled for next week because neither of these applies but I can’t afford it without some aid/a ton of debt. I can let you know if they say anything new.

sounds great let me know
