I just heard that Clemson charges $300/semester for students to be in the honors college. I think that is ridiculous. Has anyone heard of any other honors colleges that charge fees?

My daughter’s (a state U) doesn’t charge anything to be in the honors college. Other than paying for several honors classes she finds interesting that aren’t necessarily required for her degree. But I am ok with that as I like it when she finds classes that excite her. But no extra fees - the honors classes are the same $ per hour as the regular classes (for much smaller classes so a good deal really).

My D was charged $45 a semester “honor course fee”. She was in 2 honors courses; I don’t think it was dependent on that, just another fee to stick us with due to her being in the honors program.

Count yourself lucky, Pierre! My D’s honor college at our Flagship State U has a “resource fee” to the tune of $2169 the first year, $993 the second year, and $774 for the last two years.

I guess it doesn’t bother me in the same way because we knew it going in. If we weren’t willing to take it on, we would have told her she couldn’t go to the honors college. However, if we’d just gotten that news suddenly in a bill with no idea it was coming… that would rile me too!

D’s Honors has several Merit Scholarships attached, so we are paying considerably less, not more because of her being in Honors.

Pierre, we learned the same thing about Clark Honors College on a visit to U of Oregon this spring – to our surprise and, like you, irritation.

From their Web site: “There is an additional Resource Fee for students in Clark Honors College. For students entering in the 2008-2009 academic year, the fee is $723 per term for the first year, $361 per term the second year, and $258 per term for subsequent terms.”

D’s honors college does not charge any extra fees, but there is a $100 fee if one chooses to live in on an honors dorm floor. It wasn’t a surprise and is in line with what other special interest group floors charge. D was also accepted to the Clemson honors program, and I don’t recall reading about that charge anywhere.

I’m not in the honors program but I talked to some honors students and they got a letter in the mail a few days ago explaining about the fee…
