Does anyone know what stats qualified for Honors program this year and whether it differs among majors? D found out today she got a $12,000 Dean’s scholarship, but no Honors, in Theatre. Kind of expected Honors, so very mixed feelings…Seems like an even tougher year than we thought it would be. NE was a safety for D, so now I’m worried about her matches.

I got into Honors for CBA with a 31ACT and 2040 SAT and SAT Subject tests all in the high 600s’, low 700’s, lots of EC’s and leaderhsip positions. I also got a Dean’s Scholarship but only for $11,000. According to the Honors Website I got linked to in my acceptance they took the top 10% of applicants to evaluate which ranged from 31 and above ACT and above a 1400 for SAT M+CR.

Congrats to your D on her acceptance, but sorry about the Honors I have a lot of friends in similar situations. Admissions this year seem to be a crapshoot everywhere.

I got into the Honors Program-3.9/4.0 GPA, 2180 SATs, top 1% rank, tons of ECs. She may have just missed the cut-off.

Last year, my daughter was right on the edge. She did not get honors, but got more in terms of scholarships and other aid that some of her fellow students that DID get into honors. We were told she could request a review, but really didn’t see the point. She wanted to have the regular dorm experience , so the honors housing, as great as it is wasn’t as appealing to her.
She is doing grat…made the Dean’s list and couldn’t be happier. She graduated in the top 5% of her high school class .

I also got into honors (full tuition as a National Merit Finalist) as a journalism major. 98-ish GPA, 2320 SATs, ranked 7/251, and 740/720/640 SAT IIs. Not sure what the cut-off was.

There is some fluctuation from major to major within the honors program. In other words, the cut off for a CBA major may be different from a CJ major.

Honors is the top 10% of accepted applicants in each college. For instance, if one year all of the CJ accepted students got straight As and the CAS accepted students averaged a C (obviously not true, this is merely an example) then even a great student in CJ may not get honors but a not-so-great student in CAS might.

Don’t worry, plenty of people apply to be honors after their first semester here and et accepted. Quite a few honors students drop out of the program by the time they graduate because of the gpa requirement. I am currently an honors freshman and while my gpa is solid, I am the only one of my roommates with above a 3.4 (honors requirement) for first semester. Don’t be scared though, most people don’t do that well first semester of college, not matter if you are honors or not.

Hm. I got honors for BSIB - Spanish concentration—3.8UW and 1400/2130, Dean’s Scholarship for 15k/year.

I do have an extensive EC list though and I took 5 APs… plus 5 this year, and my GPA is pretty good this year.

i was accepted into CBA but if i wanted to switch schools would i still be in the honors program

My daughter was accepted for honors – 1450 M and CR and 4.0 UW about 5 weighted. She received 14k/year Deans scholarship. She took 4 APs already and is taking 4 more.

MommaJ, My D (last year) did not get into honors college but received Dean’s Scholarship. When we called about my daughter and asked why? (She was #1 in class, top SAT’s etc… Was told they were looking for diversity in the honors college? In the end my D got into Harvard…(go figure) and is quite happy there! By the way my son got into honors college this year but no money…I have no idea what they are thinking!!! He found out Saturday that he got into MIT and will wait to see what happens when the rest of the schools he applied to give thier decisions. But with no money he will not be attending Northeastern, a shame as he really liked the CO-OP aspect of the school. So don’t worry… to me it sounds like they are looking for a wide variety of kids when selecting the Honors college just as they do in the admissions process at colleges, they want 3 females, two basket weavers, 4 tennis players, 4 blue and 6 green people…etc…It about variety…It in no way reflects whether she will get into other schools… And from what they told me Honors is SELECTED from the top 10% not THE Top 10%.

Even if you transferred to a different college you would still be in honors. However, there are three ways to graduate with honors. You can graduate with honors course distinction by taking 6 honors classes one of which has to be a seminar, you can graduate with with honors project distinction by doing a year-long honors project your senior year, or you can graduate with honors college distinction by doing both. Just being “in honors” doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily have honors when you graduate.

So yes you will still be in honors, but if you transfer too late and end up not being able to take the classes necessary… However if you already know you want to change, then I highly doubt you’ll have a problem.
