Honors Program Professors?

Any recommendations for professors in the A&S Honors Program for those currently part of the program? I have to go to orientation next month, and I was wondering who some of the best professors are before I register for courses…

It really depends on what you’re looking for…I had Professor Botwinik and he was, by far, the easiest freshmen-year Western Cult professor. The workload was extremely light relative to the number of credits it was worth. The class, however, was not the most interesting of classes and he tends to lecture a good amount. On the opposite spectrum, Professor Duket is known for his significant workload but my friends who have had them claim that they have learned a lot in his class. Generally, Professor Botwinik gives out A-/A- for just doing the work, and an A/A- if you put in a good amount of effort into the assignments (there is a 1 page essay per week and one 5-7 page essay per semester). I would recommend him if you want an easy “A” but only for that reason.

I had Duket. You will learn a lot. It’s a serious class for serious students. That’s being said, I don’t like Duket’s teaching style. I can’t pin point what about it that I don’t like. For sophomore year, you have a good number of professors to pick from. I would recommend either Martin or O’connor. Martin for the easier A’s and more off the topic discussions, O’Connor for some serious academic fun. Junior year is a little different. Unlike the first two years where you take the same class with the same group of people and the same professor for the entire year, junior year splits into two classes with two different professors, one for each semester. You can do Martin again in junior year. Vanessa Rumble I heard is pretty good. If he continues to teach, and you are looking to do a senior thesis, I recommend Alan Lawson, who only does the spring semester. Lawson’s seminar is more American oriented than most seminars in HP and your final research project has to do with your senior thesis.

I checked the course schedule for 2009, and there are a few other professors listed as teaching freshman Honors… what about them?

Dear Savs : West Cult I and II in the freshman year should be about challenging students in the Socratic Method of learning. This is the closest that BC comes to the Williams Tutorial System or similar. You are seeking professors who are exceptionally well read and critical thinkers. Professors who require 200+ pages per week and constant papers for the sake of learning are missing the thrust of the Honors Program. Busy work is notionally how a High School program should run; critical thinking abilities in the Jesuit/Socratic tradition are what the Honors Program should encourage.

Take Constas.
