Is it possible to get into the honors program with a SAT score under 1400?

I was wondering the same question too.
: P

I got in with a 1400 (2140 total). I think your rec. letter matters… and extra curricular etc.

i got waitlisted for honors with a 1390

I got in with a 1280, but I had a 32 ACT score.

I went to an information session when my SAT was a 1380. They told me I had to raise it to get into the honors program. I made a 1450 the next time-- motivation :)

I’m sorry but the uga students in the honor program all made at least a 1800 with lots of extracurricular activities in high school. I’m trying to apply to the Honors Program in the 2nd semester and I have to maintain at least a 3.75 gpa with 15 credit hours! So, obviously it’s not easy to get in. You should still apply and see what happens.

Drummerboy, I think he’s referring to a 1400/1600, not a 1400/2400.

I have a 1360 SAT (2040 total) and a 33 ACT score.

Would it hurt me at all for application to UGA Honors if I am unable to raise my SAT score? Would it be worth trying to raise my ACT score as well? And would it be advisable to submit only my ACT score?

Thank you for your help!

Your ACT is awesome. I don’t know how much emphasis they put on the SAT over ACT. 1400 SAT seems to look good for Honors… but I only had a 31 on my ACT. Could you send in your ACT score… and not send your SAT until you raise it just a tad? That may be an option. But, really, my rec. letter was amazing. See if you can get an amazing rec. ,and I am sure you would be in.

Is it possible to get in with average rec’s and average EC’s? I mean, I don’t think any of my planned ones would be like, “He is a menace to society blah blah blah,” but I dunno if they’d be all “He’ll probably cure cancer” and whatnot. And I mean, I personally think my EC’s would look awesome if adcoms spent the week of a theatre production in my shoes, but I dunno how good they’ll look on paper.

Does anyone know if any honors applicants have gotten in with good scores, but not as good rec’s and EC’s?

i went to UGA yesterday and they said that if your scores (SAT or ACT) and gpa are higher than x then your automatically in. They dont look at anything else.

That’s true for early admission to the University, but for the Honors Program you have to submit a separate Honors application or an application for the Foundation Fellowship. There is no minimum SAT for Honors, but most admitted appear to have a CR/M score of 1400 or higher.

What do Foundation Fellowship recipients generally have as far as SAT/ACT scores go?

The site says “Competitive applicants should have an unweighted high school GPA of at least 3.70 and a combined SAT score of 1400 (critical reading and math only) or ACT score of 31.” It’s very, very competitive though–only about twenty people get the Foundation each year.

For the last 4 years, each admitted Foundation Fellowship class has had averages GPAs of at least 4.11 (on the UGA scale) and SATs over 1500 (CR and M only, although it’s interesting that a UGA-sponsored study recently came out that showed Writing scores had more correlation with GPAs than CR/M). The standards seem to rise every year though- The incoming fellows for the class of '12 have an SAT/ACT average of 1522/34 and average GPA of 4.17. The incoming Ramseys have very similar stats as well- 1522/33 and 4.18. This year’s Charter Scholarship recipients had a 1394 SAT average and “above a 4.0” GPA average.

And I’m pretty sure if you have good scores/GPA and not-terrible recs and ECs you have a good shot at getting in. Not everyone in the Honors program was a do-it-all overachiever in highschool, although there are a fair number of 'em.

By UGA’s scale, I have like a 4.03ish or something like that, because I’ve only taken three AP’s so far, the maximum amount I could take. However, I’m taking six more next year.

Am I boned?

I suppose it’s worth noting that if I’m able to get all A’s next year (not unlikely), I will have about a 4.17. However, all of my AP classes are on year-round scheduling, so only my mid-course grades will be available when FF is awarded.

You’re certainly not “boned”; remember, this is just the average, so there are going to be some people with lower and higher GPAs/Test Scores. It also depends on what your school offers- some schools only offer a small number of AP classes while others are known for having almost every single subject available. In general, for college admissions, it helps to have taken the most challenging courses available to you at your school.

As someone said earlier, getting even an interview for the Fellowship is difficult- out of 800-900 qualified applicants, only 60-70 get an interview and out of those only 25ish are awarded a fellowship. It can’t hurt to apply though, since the FF app. serves as an honors program and other scholarship application too I believe (correct me if I’m wrong). If anyone’s got any more specific questions, feel free to PM me for details.
