Honors program..when do we find out

Got into gemstone =)

can you share your stats or tips/advice??

I haven’t received any email yet…
This is nerve-racking.

FatAnorexic- I was responding to GoldTortoise, who said DCC students get ipads, and had heard from a friend that all honors students get iphones/itouches. My understanding from the current year is that DCC gets ipads, Banneker/Key gets iphone/itouch, and that’s it.

Got into DCC- ~4.15 W with heavy upward trend, 2290 SAT single-sitting. Anybody know whether the iPads we get will be the old ones or the ones Apple just announced?

My DS got into DCC also, via email yesterday. UW GPA 3.91; ACT 33, lots of ECs. Sounds like a great Honors program.

@HoComom I was responding to pluzmal. I realize my sentence was a little hazy, but I meant that all DCC people were getting iPads. I have not heard anything about all honors students getting an iTouch, and I highly doubt it will happen.

Another person in Gemstone here!

I emailed DCC and they said it’s the new model.

Don’t know why I didn’t receive an email, but I called the office and they said that I got into DCC! Finally relieved now.

Oh stats ok:
Out of state (FL), 4.0 UW, many AP classes, 36 ACT, national Merit Finalist, pretty good ECs I guess
I also think my essay for DCC was really good.

you are killing me!!!awesome job!

dont get mad at me for this question…
do you HAVE to do a living/learning program if you were accepted as an honors student?
will you not graduate with honors if you don’t do the living/learning program?
i got into DCC, and the ipad looks great and all, but im not really sure what i want to do.
someone please respond to this, im kinda confused/not sure what i want to do.

the maryland people have been really great. I wasn’t sure when I applied what I wanted to be in, and I had heard gemstone was the most “prestigious” so I chose that. at the banneker key reception, I changed my mind and asked professor dorland to be switched to humanities :)

If you were accepted to an honors program, you should definitely consider doing it. In order to earn an honors citation on your transcript, you need to complete the honors coursework designated by the honors program and your specific honors college. DCC seems like a great program, and offers great tools and training even if you aren’t 100% set on a career in comp sci or communications or anything. Also, once you get to UMD, you can easily transfer into University Honors if you find out DCC isn’t for you. I think it’s possible to transfer into a separate Honors College (aside from University Honors), but it’s a more difficult process. Honors Colleges give you a small community of 70 or so people within UMD’s 30,000 person campus. It offers you the chance to engage in a smaller community with similar interests, and also offers you better dorms, advising, and research/mentorship possibilities than not being involved in an honors program. IMO, there’s no reason to opt not to be involved in Honors if you’re invited.

Do honors students get priority registration?

^^ “Do honors students get priority registration?”

Sort of … priority (after your first semester) is determined by total credits. Since Honors College students are more likely to have AP credits on their transcripts, they will register earlier than others in the same graduating class. For example: For Spring '11, I registered as a “junior” even though it was only my second semester. :)
