Is it worth taking an honors version of a regular class? I’d rather take my honors classes via the seminars. I’m wondering specifically about Math 140 versus 140V. Are there advantages to taking the “V” version?

well you can take as many honors classes as you want, you just need to take 5 to graduate with the citation

but on that topic, is it common for people to take a lot of honors classes? or just the 5 needed? are the H versions that much more difficult that you wouldn’t want to take more than one per semester?

H-versions really arent even required … you just need 5 either/or of h-versions or honors seminars [most of which are manageable] … not to say you shouldnt take any H-versions either because I know some of them are actually beneficial

D1 took a couple of H versions of classes that she needed for her majors. I think she had to do an additional presentation at the end of the semester for one of the classes, which wasn’t too bad. Most of her CORE requirements were met via AP credit that she brought with her, so she took the Honors seminars that met the requirements that she still needed. If you’ve got the space in your schedule, some of those seminars really sound interesting and worth taking just for the learning of it. The best ones are generally the ones that fill up the quickest. Make sure and check out the professor ratings on myumd.edu. She took one seminar freshman year that really sounded great but turned out to be NOT good due to the professor. She just finished Ancient Greek and Roman Warfare (signed up based on the professor rating) and she REALLY enjoyed the class. The idea of her in that class still makes me laugh, but she loved it. (I think it was one of her A+ grades this semester).

You need a certain number of either seminars or H-versions. I don’t remember which it is.

But I do know that it’s not told to anyone during orientation, but being Gemstone all through your four years fufills the honors requirements and you don’t have to take either H-versions or seminars.
