Honors vs. Second Major

which would be most beneficial to an engineering student?

I’m entering as a ChE (BME concentration) freshman, looking to stay as competitive as possible for grad school

at my state school, we have the Honors College, where you have to take 6 hours of honors credit per semester. Thing is, most of these “honors credit” classes are humanities: for example, first semester, i’ll be taking Microeconomics and Philosophical Classics. neither of which really interest me…but will be easy

so. i was thinking, 6 credits per semester could definitely add up to a minor or a second major in a related field (such as Math). But is it really worth the extra trouble?

I really doubt I could do both, so which would look best to the top grad schools? an Honors ChE degree, or a ChE/Math double major?

I personally would double major, since I don’t care about humanities.

if you just want to be competitive then honors’ probably a better choice

It’s better to be strong in one area than ok in a few areas for grad schools. They look for people to be great in a sub-field and not to be kind of good overall. Go with whatever is more relevant to your major, whether it be a double major or just taking more electives within your current major.
