Hoodie Recommendation for Outdoor Running

My D casually mentioned that she would like to get a hoodie for Christmas. She is 19 and a sophomore, starting this semester she likes to run outside rather than on treadmill and she said the regular hoodie is too bulky. She is petite and very picky with how her clothing should fit. I told her we can go shopping for one over winter break, but I want to surprise her by putting one under the tree!! (she can easily make exchange if need be)

Can those who run outdoor recommend the type of hoodie that I can get her? Is certain material better than the others? She did mention she prefers those with “funnel neck”. Should I stick with brand names like Nike, UA etc?

Thanks.

What kind of weather is she running in? Midwest temps? Southern temps??

Lululemon and Athleta are actually great brands that would probably be coveted by a young woman (and older women too!!) I’ll let others who have experienced certain styles list them for you.

Here are a few other choices:

this one is for colder temps

The temperature she is running in is really a factor in what to buy. When dressing for running, I usually take the temp it is outside, add 20 degrees and then dress how I might dress for outside in that temperature. So if the outside air temp is 50, then I will dress how I would dress if it was 70 and I was not running. Does that make sense??? Sometimes a little less.

@abasket, what you said make sense, we are in the northeast, not sure if she would brave a 20 degree weather to run outside, or when is snow on the ground. She used to run on treadmill in the gym, so hasn’t run outdoor during the real cold winter months yet. She prefers the funnel neck type instead of a hood.

I looked at a couple with funnel neck:

This one is made specifically for running (Rulu fabric):

Picky Lulu customers have it 4/5 stars - that’s excellent. If your D has long hair, hoods with ponytail hole are very helpful.

Their down hoodie is amazing (but very pricy!).

I also HIGHLY recommend looking at Osielle - designed by runners for runners. Here is one option:

Hopeful: I am a runner and I will not wear any of those Nikes for running - too bulky and not very breathable.

If you want to spend some $$$, this pullover is absolutely adored by every runner I know and is actually worn for running:

It can be worn as a light jacket, too.

For running you’ll want a “technical” fiber (aka microfiber) not cotton. The type of weather is definitely a consideration. For colder weather like <40 she’ll probably want a snug technical inner layer, and a looser hoodie. For moderate temps like <60 a slimmer single-layer hoodie would be better. My W and D like Lulu Lemon, Lorna Jane, Nike, and Athleta.

Since I’m a guy, here’s the male examples of what I’m talking about. I’m sure you can find the female equivalents. These examples are somewhat pricey and overly fancy. I’m sure there are much cheaper options available.

You have tons of great suggestions and every young (and old) person loves lululemon. It is very “in” and I am sure she would love one, even if it’s not the right one, she can get one she loves.

Having said that, I have this hoody that I love. It’s very stretchy and pretty warm. It was the first thing I thought of when you mentioned what your D wanted. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/79916?feat=886-GN3&page=polartec-power-stretch-hoodie

Edited to say that Abasket and I think alike. Haha
