Hoodwinked

So I was the at bank setting up a new account and I told the lady I didn’t want a credit card but she some how managed to talk me into getting one by saying it was for overdraft protection. So my question is, if l cancel the card the minute i get it how bad will it hurt my credit. Or should I leave it open and never charge on it?

If you don’t have any credit, the best way to build a good score is to HAVE credit! If you are a young person, it is very hard to get credit of any kind wothout a “past history”, so, if that’s the case, you are now “golden”. Keep the card, make a small purchase every few months and pay it right off. Cancelling the card right away will not help you since it will stay on your record for 10 years, so my advice would be to keep the thing, use it wisely and beat them at their own game!

Are you under 21? If so, I thought it was very difficult to get a credit card? But in any event, I agree with Mezz – but be careful.

You should keep the credit card, and use it to pay for a monthly subscription, and then set up an automatic payment for the amount of the subscription. I have 3 credit cards; I use one for day to day stuff(that I pay off in full every month), one I have had for 3 years that I use only for Netflix, and one for emergencies(it has the lowest rate). I have really, really good credit.

yes I’m under 21, 18 to be exact. i thought it would be difficult to get one too especially since i"m not working, but i got approved for $500.Thank you guys for the advice it was really helpful. I’ll just charge $5 every few months.

Do keep the card. You may find it very helpful if you order used books online. They’ll be cheaper than new copies at the bookstore. Also, if you need to book a flight or make a train reservation, having a credit card is great. Make sure to pay off the credit card before the due date.

You sure it was a credit card and not debit or Visa Check card ?

yes it was a credit card. It has an interest rate

wow…that is some bank. Most of them won’t consider college students any more…even with money in the bank
I would go for it , but be VERY careful
