<p>Alumni relative - parent, yes a hook; other relatives, at most schools, no.</p>

<p>scholarship athlete - scholarship is immaterial, think Ivies, no scholarships, but being a recruited athlete is probably the most reliable hook of all.</p>

<p>really good essays - not a hook</p>

<p>really good gpa - not a hook</p>

<p>overcoming obstacles (living in ghetto, deceased parent) - not hooks</p>

<p>Other hooks are URM, development admit (child of a major potential donor), and political clout (child of US President, US Senator)</p>
