Hooks.

My first question is how far should I go to demonstrate a ‘hook?’ For example, I am Hispanic. Do I need to incorporate this in an essay or is simply checking it on my application enough?

Secondly, is being a first generation American a hook? My father was born in Mexico and my mother in China. They both immigrated here as children. And again, is it enough to just list the differing country of origins or should I incorporate it in my essays.

Lastly, this deals more with classification. But since I am half hispanic and half Asian and I am always declared myself as hispanic as I live with my dad, is it a disadvantage to list I am both Hispanic and Asian? I usually just check Hispanic on things.

I’m not an expert but, depending on percentages, I believe you would list Asian and Hispanic. Our D is Native Hawaiian and Caucasian and lists both.

Checking the box is enough. Save the essay for discussing something you’re really passionate about. If the thing you’re really passionate about is related to your heritage, then sure, you can write about it.

If it matters, I’m first generation American as well and didn’t mention it at all in the application, and I got in.
