<p>"As Joey McMahan eloquently delivered his gold-medal winning speech at the California Academic Decathlon awards ceremony in March, he spoke of the significance of hope by focusing on the ascendancy of Barack Obama to the presidency, after decades of struggles by African-Americans.</p>

<p>“After examining the positive changes that some people have witnessed in their lifetime, it’s impossible to deny that hope is real, and change can happen,” said McMahan, a Casa Grande High School senior, last week.</p>
