Hosiery

@surfcity - you bet! :slight_smile:

Yes to Wolford sheer hosiery and opaque tights, but only when it is too cold to wear bare legs. Also, when it gets colder, I wear Lululemon black yoga pants as “tights” with my sweater dresses. Socks and boots.

@Marian I doubt you are older than I am.

I don’t wear hose that are skin colored…but I do have a grey and black ones…and some with some designs on them. I also have some tights to wear with various tops I have.

But nude or suntan hose? I haven’t worn them in years. If it’s that cold…I wear boots.

Years ago a poster with the name Pizzagirl raved about Berkshire nude fishnet ights and I got addicted. Totally works between tan legs and cold white legs when black tights are just too early and too dismal. They disappear and you don’t even see they are fishnet until you are close. I don’t wear “pants” unless under duress so I need something on my legs in late fall.

Our Target has a small selection too. I highly recommend figure skating tights for the winter, Mondor is the brand. You have to buy them online or in pro shops. They’re pricey, but they are warm and last a whole lot longer than regular panty hose.

I can see my cats climbing up my pantyhose!

I still wear hose when they look right with whatever dress I need to wear. I buy them at Target or the drugstore.

Our legs really do look so much nicer in them, don’t they? But, they really are out of style and aging. I was at DSW the other day and some gal was standing in front of me in a business skirt and heels with sheer black hose. It looked so dated. I understand why people still wear them this time of year with skirts or dresses. I find I just won’t wear a skirt or dress unless it goes with black tights. But if I did, I’d do what @abasket does and put on a little tanner. I haven’t done that yet. I would wear them to a job interview in the winter.

Sryrstress, have not had a dress on in 17 yrs.
no nylons.
I still would buy and wear a cheap pair under pants if I needed to visit Antarctica (Chicago, Indiana, Vermont)
During a winter storm.

I’m another one who doesn’t like the feel of shoes on bare feet. I’ll wear flats without hose, but any sort of closed heel I still wear pantyhose. I wear dresses rarely, so the need for hose is small. I usually wear the Donna Karan or Hanes linked by chercheur. My comfort is more important than what’s in style.

I don’t like pantyhose because I’m so short it’s difficult not to have them pooling at my ankles, but I only wear dresses. Since my dresses are always below my knees, my solution is Hue brand knee high trouser socks. They fit well, wear well and last a long time. They come in all colors and summer, winter weights. Sheer or opaque. In cold weather I frequently wear cropped silk leggings under my dresses for warmth, sometimes with wool smart socks and ankle boots. I’d wear a garter belt before I’d wear pantyhose, butI don’t see that happening in the foreseeable future.

Side note: You can have comfort AND style!!!

It’s ok if style isn’t important to you. But it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Lots of hosiery at Amazon. I have scars on my lower leg from an accident and surgery. When wearing a dress, nothing will hide it but hosiery makes it the less obvious.

My SIL is 8 years older than I and lives in Atlanta. She told me years ago that “no one wears hosiery.” I was surprised, but I started looking around & saw that few people were wearing stockings. It’s cold in the midwest, and I just always wore them.

I have begun to go bare-legged more & more over the years, although I do tend to wear hose if I am dressing up for an evening out (not many of those in my life, but a few here & there). In the fall and winter, I wear tights to work with my dresses & skirts.

I just don’t understand. Who decided that hose are awful and why? I agree that being required to wear them really bites, but there are times that they are nice to have - warmth, hiding flaws, etc. What is so terrible about that? I guess I resent this fashion police mentality a bit. Do men have these same landmines they have to negotiate?

Hose ARE horrible! I can’t belueve y’all think they are warm! They are snaggy, runny pieces of cheap nylon fibers. Give me tights or leggings!

I grew up in the Midwest where winters are cold. I now live in New England…where winters are cold.

Hose do NOT keep your legs warm. They just don’t.

I still wear hose with dresses or skirts in all seasons. It’s either cold out or the AC is too cold inside, so an extra layer never hurts. Plus, my legs look nicer with hose–hides scaly skin, veins, saggy knees. I never thought anyone would notice that I’m wearing hose and think it is unfashionable. I’m over 55 so I can be old-fashioned without shame. I think a lot of Midwesterners still wear them.

Why are tights seen as so much better? The worst part of hose, other than freezing in a dress, is the constriction on my abdomen and waist. Don’t tights do the same thing on the constriction?

You are wearing wrong types/brands of tights or hose then. Pants also have a waistband…

I do sometimes wear hose to give my legs a little help - covering up blemishes and some veins etc. I do not think they give any warmth at all - unless it’s summer and then they do make me feel hot!

@sryrstress I do think you must be buying the wrong size. Or perhaps buying control top? (I hate control top). Hose shouldn’t “constrict” at all, it should just stay up. Does your bathing suit constrict?
