Hosiery

So women just don’t wear hosiery anymore? I went to the Jockey outlet store in Freeport today and the sales clerk said they haven’t sold it for years. She told me to try CVS, and they had a small supply. I don’t like how my bare legs look when I wear dresses, so I will wear hose even if it’s not “in.”

I don’t think my 25 yo daughter has ever worn hosiery except for when it was required for her High School show choir or theater events. Some of the girls in her high school show choir had to be told what a slip was, as well.

Good riddance.

I remember when I started my professional career in Phoenix, women in our firm were required to wear skirt suits, heels and hose. For people who haven’t been to Phoenix, it is over 100 degrees there from May until November.

Good times. Pretty sure that ingrained my reaction just like Pavlov’s poor dog. I only have to read the word “hosiery” and I break into a sweat…

We had a somewhat contentious thread on this in regards to a job interview. I think you can still get it at the department stores. What about tights? Would they work for you? I wear tights or footless leggings/boots/low boots.

We had a gathering at work today, and we were talking about how it’s OK to wear boots without hose (or tights). Only one of several women in the room wears hose on any kind of regular basis.
I do have some, purchased from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, just in case I have a need for them. (Think dead of winter to a funeral or possibly another winter formal occasion).
I do wear tights fairly regularly in the winter.

I always do. I get stomachache and loose stool when my tummy gets cold. I ware hosiery even in summer because of the strong AC the buildings blast!!

@BunsenBurner will be here shortly to tout woffords I believe. I keep wanting to try them based on her recommendations!

I wear hosiery occasionally for events, and I like them. My legs definitely look better. I wear different brands but currently have these:

Hosiery had a mini resurgence a couple years ago linked to the fact that Kate Middleton is often photographed wearing it.

I second Donna Karan “ the Nudes”.

I do wear hosiery if I am at a nice evening event. I have purchased it at Macy’s, Penney’s, Sears, and Nordstrom. So try traditional department stores.

Thanks, everyone. I work from home so usually I don’t even think about looking nice! Tomorrow I’m flying to a national structural engineering summit in Chicago. I have to chair a session (just found that out three days ago!). There will be a fancy awards ceremony one night and apparently another amazing dinner on the Navy Pier. Thank goodness it’s just a bunch of engineers, ha.

My daughter 23 and her friends have never worn hose. When my mother gave her the “But Kate Middleton does” trope, My kid retorted “Ok well when I’m married to an hier to a throne I’ll be sure to do that. One of her friends who works in consumer anaytics says that less than 5 percent of women under 35 ever wearplain sheer hose.

They have a small hose section in Target. Very small. Try there.

The last time I wore hose was 3 years ago at D’s wedding - Donna Karen The Nudes (as recommended by others here).
I do wear black tights in the winter.

Ahhh! The perennial hosiery thread!!!

No hose for me in YEARS. However from now until weather breaks in April or so I will be wearing black footless tights daily with my work skirts/dresses. (no footed tights - hate the way they feel on my feet! )

I hate, hate, HATE the way shoes feel against my feet without socks or hosiery in between.

I wear sandals in the summer because everyone does – even to work – in the DC area. But I await the time every year when I can change back to shoes with socks or hosiery. It just happened about two weeks ago. Yay!

It goes without saying that I’m older than most of you.

It depends on the weather and the shoe I’m wearing, if I do or don’t. Plus, my legs also look way better in hose. I don’t care anymore if they are “in” or “out”.

I also wear them under pants/jeans in the winter. They are another layer to keep me warm as I have to walk the dogs no matter how cold it is.

I despised panty hose, but that was due to the fact they always hurt my tummy, so no tights either. My solution was never to wear dresses.

If you are wearing a dress, how do you all keep from freezing? There’d be no way I would wear a dress with bare legs in Midwest winters. I’m a couple of hours south of Chicago, and I think it’s already too cold with pants!

Along the hosiery theme, D is interviewing with a large accounting firm in the Pacific NW. She usually wears sheer knee hi hose with her pumps so she doesn’t get blisters. Now I’m wondering if this will be really out of place in that setting.

I’m in the Midwest. Like I said, tights that are not sheer but more like really light leggings. No sheen. Dresses/skirts everyday at work! If I was going to a wedding or special event though I would wear bare legs. My skin is never pale and I’d plan ahead and lightly apply tanner a day or two before. But that is rare…

I was just buying some low foot liners yesterday - there are ALL kinds of styles of foot liners out there now. Liners with no backs for mules, liners with no toe for peep toes - ALL kinds!
