Hospital Appearance

This may seem like a stupid question, but the hospital in Greys Anatomy and House M.D look really nice; are there hospitals that look like that? I watch Discovery Health channel a lot and the hospitals seem a little bland.

Hospitals are much more bland, and not nearly as spotless. The walls are nicked. In ER’s especially is not as clean since there is a constant flow of people, no matter how much they clean its just never perfectly clean.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are the only ones I’ve seen that aren’t bland. Children’s Memorial in Chicago decorated each floor a different theme; like the sea, or wind, and then they have little footprints or wind swirls on the floor to guide you to the right place. It’s a very nice place to be.

Another reason I’m going to be a pediatrician - grown-up hospitals are depressing!

Actually, most Children’s Hospitals I’ve ever seen are gorgeous. But VO’s right, most hospitals have a very standard look to them.

And most hospitals smell bad, at least the ones I’ve been too. But its the patients that lead to that. Yet another fun part of medicine.

Depends on what you think smells bad. I know I don’t mind the smell of sterilization chemicals, vomit, blood, whatever - urine is a little unpleasant, but I cannot STAND airport/hotel smells. It makes me want to throw up, just sleeping under hotel sheets. So I guess it depends on what you like. If you can’t stand the smell of sick, medical practice might be a problem. Research can still be an option, though.

oh I LOVE airport/hotel smells…so awesome lol…and I love the hospital smell too…haha

You don’t have to pretend as if you like those smells to be a doctor. Human nature says you don’t like them. Those smells you put are the easy smells. Hospitals for the most part smell of what you put, ERs and especially busy level I trauma centers don’t. Ever smell room after room of urine, vomit, and really nasty infections, not being cleaned instantly becasue there is no time for it? Infections are the worst, the really bad ones that start rotting flesh smells horrid, even most of the doctors can’t stand it.

Obviously no one likes those smells, but doctors do need the ability to not throw up every time they smell infection or body fluids.

Yeah, the Grey’s Anatomy hospital looked really nice…the House M.D. hospital, kinda dark…lol :)

but I’ve seen a lot of childeren’s hospitals and I agree with bluedevilmike–they are GORGEOUS. like the one in Stanford…it’s a horrible thought, but it’s like you WANT to be there…

also, most of the hospitals I’ve seen are pretty clean…ER rooms kinda bland but also clean…obviously not like the ones on TV. but still hospital clean.

From a letter I wrote to one medical school I visited:

So on the very last colonoscopy I performed for my primary care block…the patient’s watery feces literally shot out of him and on to me…so gross…and yet I sat there covered and helped finished the procedure…such a trooper.

Bigred don’t you need to take a laxative before getting a colonoscopy?

some people don’t prep well, or it doesn’t work as well on some people. but the laxative did explain why it was so runny.
