Hot Chocolate K-Cups

My new guilty pleasure is the Keurig brewer I received for Christmas. I bought some hot chocolate K-cups by Cafe Escapes and I am not that thrilled with them. I use the medium sized cup setting when I make it, as the large setting watered it down too much, but there’s just got to be a better, richer tasting hot chocolate for the Keurig! Suggestions?

I make my hoy cocoa on the stove just like Meg Murry’s’ mum in A Wrinkle in Time.

DH bought one of those Keurig machines last year even though neither of us drink coffee. I think he thought we’d use it for hot chocolate and for guests who drink coffee. The hot chocolate, IMO, is just downright bad. DH couldn’t stand it, either. We now have a machine that sits on the counter and gets used maybe five times a year. I just make hot chocolate the old fashioned way … warm milk, cocoa and sugar.

I’ve got one in my office at work. I’ve found good coffee K-cups, but I’ve also been disappointed in the hot cocoa ones. They don’t taste chocolatey. I use it just for the hot water to add to a cocoa mix.

No good hot chocolate is made with hot water…yuk! Milk all the way  I used my Keurig once to make hot chocolate - one sip and tossed.

Yea, have been VERY disappointed with the hot chocolate the times I’ve had it with the K-cup. Agree that using milk and cocoa tastes WAY better. The microwave or pot works fine. Another reason we will not have a K-machine in our home. ;)

Normally (and when I’m making it for more than just me) I make my hot cocoa on the stove with milk also. I figured the Keurig would provide a way for me to make a quick, good cup, knowing that it won’t taste like the genuine thing. But I can’t stand the taste of the cups I have. Outside of that, I absolutely, positively LOVE my Keurig and the coffee varieties I’ve tried.

My son liked the milk chocolate version of the Cafe Escapes. When I make the cocoa, I use the smaller cup setting and add some milk.

I use my Keurig to heat water for tea, so you could use the Swiss Miss or another brand cocoa mix if you want something fast.

I LOVE my Keurig and am actually on my second machine after the water pump went out on the first one. My only regret is that we will not have enough money to send DS to college because the K-cups do add up. I think I’ll go have a cup of coffee. Have a lovely afternoon.

Funny story abot hot chocolate. One morning while I was in the shower, my husband and then 16 yr old, very intelligent honor student decided to make hot chocolate in my new Keurig. When I got out of the shower I heard a bit of commotion and then I hear them both laughing hysterically. I come out to find that these two seemingly intelligent human beings had opened the instant hot cocoa mix and dumped it in the little basic to make hot cocoa. Needless to say, the chocolate powder was everywhere and it was a real pain to clean the machine. I could not believe that between the two of them they couldn’t figure out to just use the machine for the hot water.

And about the k-cups for hot chocolate, we tried several and were not real thrilled with any of them. To make it taste even Hal way decent we had to use the smallest cup size and even that tasted watered down. We gave up and just use regular mix and instant hot water from the Keurig.

I add some half and half to a cup of Keurig Dark Chocolate (the dark version is a little more chocolate-y) to make it richer, and end up with an okay, but not great, lazy woman’s beverage. But I mostly use my Keurig for a cup of dark roast decaf–yum!

I encountered my first Keurig years and years ago when it was installed in my workplace, to everyone’s delight. Then quite a long time went by before the home version was announced, and I pounced on it. On my second one now. It’s especially useful when I’ve got company–nowadays it’s impossible to just brew a pot of coffee and expect everyone to partake, so it’s nice to be able to offer caf, decaf, flavored, tea, herbal tea, etc. Guests always get a kick out of all the options.

We have a Keurig in our store for our customers…neither my husband or I drink coffee , but it has been a big hit for the last few months ,along with the cookies and other sweets I make every weekend…for the hot chocolate people ,we have Land O Lakes packets and they are very well received.
I think they are very good for a mix ,and I too prefer to make it with milk. Surprisingly good !

glad someone started this thread; I thought it was me…

we love our Keurig coffee; the hot chocolate is AWFUL!!!

I love my Keurig for everything but hot chocolate. It’s terrible. I’ve been wanting to try the hot apple cider. Anybody try that?

Also, for those who have not gone online and registered their Keurig, you still can, even if you’ve owned it for a year or two like I have. When you do they allow you to buy two boxes of coffee and get two free. Makes it cheaper than even Kohl’s with a 40% coupon or Costco. And the variety is unbelievable.

@lje62: Those Land O’ Lakes hot chocolates are very good for instant drinks, I must admit! We’ve got some at work and that’s how I came to find out about them. Of all the instant hot chocolates, Land O’ Lakes has become my favorite.

I am allergic to milk, and while the hot chocolate k cups are off limits, the chocolate flavored coffees are all fine. So I have been drinking the chocolate glazed donut flavored coffee in place of hot chocolate now.

Though, I was always a swiss miss and hot water kind of gal, so I guess I am low maintainence.

3bm103, the apple cider is pretty darn good. I am not generally a hot cider drinker but bought a 24 pack of the cider for my office mates who don’t drink coffee (the office just stocks two kinds of coffee and one tea). Everyone loved them!
