Hotel for Under 21 yo

My college age son (19) will be traveling on business next week. He will need to stay one night in a hotel. He has been instructed to make his own travel arrangements and will be reimbursed. Max cost of the hotel room is supposed to be $100/night.

Do many/most inexpensive chain hotels require guests to be 21 to check in? I am slightly familiar with the area he is traveling to, and my suggested hotel (which meets price and location specs) requires age 21.

Don’t ask me why the corporate travel department of this major corporation is not making his hotel arrangements. My impression is that his immediate supervisor is perhaps clueless.

Many hotels require guests to be 21+, but not all of them do. It also may depend on the state and city.

If your son tells the hotel that he will be traveling for X purpose for Y company, an individual hotel may waive the rule. If your son can’t find anything, I’m sure he can mention it to his boss or someone else at the company who would be able to make tha arrangements.

Some hotels are like auto rental cos for younger clients…only will accept reservations with cc and accept only major cards. If our son will be making the arrangements, it would be helpful if he had a cc with his imprinted name (may be joint with you) and of course ID’s with picture. You of course can order room for you son, with your CC guaranteeing payment-room receipt can show your son and service cost.

I’d let son make the arrangements as much as possible and you will get involved only when necessary. They need to learn sometime. Worse occasion would be he calls you to make the reservation on line while he is at the counter of the hotel.

I’ve made occasional arrangements for my kids to stay in hotels when they were under age 21. However, they weren’t travelling for business purposes, which is why I made the reservations. When their travel plans had them arriving back at school a day before their dorms opened, I would phone the hotel directly, provide my credit card info, and explain the situation. There was never a problem, and in fact one hotel was particularly helpful when my 18 y/o was checking in, giving her an upgraded room in what we thought was a particularly safe area of an already pretty nice place.

I think corranged is right - there may be exceptions to hotel rules if your son informs the hotel that he’s on a business trip. I’d always heard that car rentals were difficult for people under 25, but my 21 y/o d was able to rent a car through her employer without problems.

Many “major corporations” have basically eliminated their travel departments, and if they do still make plans it’s only for the top brass.

If he’s dressed like a business person and not a rock star he’ll get in no questions asked.
