Just found exactly what i was looking for in another section of this forum. And im not sure what this falls under – Business Admin. or Culinary Arts , or something else – but this is what i want to get into. What schools are there in NYC that have programs for this?

Not in NYC, but in the Finger Lakes region… Cornell’s School of Hotel Management is probably the very best.

Caveat: Hotel/restaurant management is a time-consuming career that has the effect of forcing you to work when everybody else is not (how would you like to be working on Thanksgiving/Christmas?). It’s very customer-oriented, so you must enjoy working with the public and being totally service-oriented. Top jobs are hard to come by, and event the GM position at a hotel pays a relatively paltry salary in many cases. In other words, if you’re seeking to get rich, don’t go there.

Good luck!

Hi Ironmike- you really do want to come to NYC. I remember I’ve been in contact with you before re: business schools in NYC. If you really want to be in NYC and you do not want to spend alot of money, I am going to strongly suggest you check out a program at NYC College of Technology - www.citytech.cuny.edu has a program in Hospitality Management which also includes culinary arts. It is in the school of professional studies. It’s located downtown Brooklyn which is about 2 subway stops (less than 10 minutes) from Wall Street area. The CUNY schools do not have dorms as most kids attending live in NYC or its suburbs and commute. LaGuardia cc also has a culinary program (I think). Check the CUNY.edu website for further info. SUNY Delhi also has a program and has a campus with dorms- but Delhi NY is quite rural and about 4 hours from NYC. There are probably private culinary arts programs in NYC- but the program at Citytech looks pretty good and will probably cost alot less. Also as it is a regualr college, if you decide culinary arts is not for you, you can transfer into another major. Check the school out.

Check out the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie about 90 minutes north of NYC. Offers both an associates and bachelors in culinary arts and I believe in hotel management. Another way to go would be to attend one of the two year feeder schools for the Cornell program. SUNY Delhi was mentioned but another is Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondack Mountains of NY State. Certainly not NYC but a very interesting program that grants an associates degree in hotel management and some relationship with Cornell.
