Hotel vs. nutritional science

I’m applying to cornell as my first choice for ED
I’m intersted in Hotel management and nutritional science, and I would say both equally. The dilemma I’m having is that during my past 3 yrs of highschool, the volunteer work and the courses were focused on science, because i thought i always thought i’d go into the health sector (and i still want to). I only have 2 business credits, intro to Business and accouting. But I love the alumni connections hotel school offers, and I think hotel management would be an intersting career with unlimited possibilities. My parents are also liking the connections hotel school offers for future careers. But on the other hand I feel like i should be going more into nutritional sci because science is always what i thought id end up with and i do like sciences. andd i know when hotel school accepts ppl., it has a focus on the work experience, but i have 0 work experience and the only volunteer expereicne that might qualify is my 3 yrs at a senior home. and the leadership criteria might be ok, i was on student gov. for 2 yrs and founder and pres. of a club. soo my question is (haha long post) which one do you suggest i go into? and i have no info on nutritional sci, so anything will help (especially careers after you graduate, and the job placements, and any good alumni connetions like hotel?) THANKS!

andd if this helps, i have about 3.7 gpa UW 3 ap courses in sciences, 2220 SAT (took it once) and 730 on Math IIC and Chem

You could apply to Hotel as your first choice & Nutritional Science as your second or vise versa. However, you should apply where you . You can go to Cornell’s CALS website and ask them for a post graduate report

accept100 - the hotel school is very selective in that they are looking for people who have a passion for the hospitality industry. and, because you have 0 work experience, I suggest getting a part time job while you still have time. also, if you do apply to the hotel school, make sure you write one hell of an essay.

accept100—I have actually heard the admission’s office’s opinion on this first hand.

If you don’t apply primary to the hotel school, the hotel school is very unlikely to really look at your app. If you are truly passionate about food science, I would major in nutritional science and do dietetics. If you do decide to take that path, you probably will be preoccupied with those classes (you do still get to take HA 106 intro to foodservice ops.) You still have the opportunity to pursue a MMH or an MBA later on in case you do want to do management.

To answer your question of which one u should go into…I am going to answer it with the most cliched answer: which ever one you are the most passionate about. Seriously…think about what you want to do. Can you image yourself dealing with numbers all day? Can you imagine yourself telling people what to do? Do you like overseeing things or doing things. Dietetics is in many ways more academic than Hotel (b.c. in hotel, who you know, and what you show people is just as important as your grades…Nutr. Sci probably focus more on it)

If you have more question pm me. I am a hotelie, but I have plenty of nutr. sci friends.

d’s good friend started as nutritional science major and then switched into Hotel so it seems doable to go from Hotel to CALS or the other way.

keep in mind that if you are a NYS resident and money is a factor, CALS tuition is a lot less expensive than the Hotel school. So you may want to factor that info into your decision making process. If you are not a NYS resident, then tuition costs are not too much different between Hotel school and CALS.

Don’t forget…Nutritional Science is also in the College of Human Ecology which is also an NYS contract college.

thanks everyone for the reply!
does anyone know people who got into the school of Hotel Admin. without any work experience?

i did…but it was a bumpy road getting there.
