H&I will be in Italy for a couple of weeks for vacation and to see S2 performing in an Italian jazz festival. We have out hotel in the jazz festival town, but we thought we’d spend 4-5 days in Rome which neither of us have ever visited.

Does anybody have some suggestions for good (not terribly expensive) hotels that are well situated. H & I speak Italian so they can be small local hotels (no B&Bs). Thanks for your suggestions.

We stayed at the Hotel Adler ([Adler hotel Roma, Via Modena 5, Via Nazionale, Piazza della Repubblica](http://www.hoteladler-roma.com/)) - lovely, not very expensive, two blocks or so to Termini station, bus stops. We really enjoyed it.

A group of small hotels on the Aventine hill. We’ve stayed at the San Anselmo and Villa S. Pio - both were very nice. I think the third hotel costs a little less.

^^ I second archiemom’s rec of Albergo del Senato. Good size, well-situated (practically next door to the Pantheon), small but not too small, plus a delicious breakfast included. I felt it was very reasonable.

Our apartment rental experience in Rome was terrible. We actually ended up moving out after 3 days. Since we had prepaid in cash (which most rentals in Rome seem to expect) we had no recourse. I will only stay in hotels in Rome from now on.

We also had a very good experience with a short-term apartment rental–easily triple the space of a hotel room at roughly half the price, plus full kitchen facilities so we saved money on breakfast.

Another vote for San Anselmo - Aventine Hill. Quiet neighborhood but easy to walk out to transportation & sites. Air conditioned. Delicious breakfast. We stayed last September.
