<p>Don’t know about piano, but we have a friend who’s a terrific violinist who’ll be starting there in the fall.</p>
<p>Houghton is a small faith based institution, with a good reputation for music education.</p>
<p>Beyond that, I can’t add anything.</p>
<p>My mother studied voice there eons ago! And my ex-boyfriend from high school works for the highschool that is connected with the college. He also raves about the music school there - except from what I remember, he is rather tone deaf. I’m sure that info helps you

<p>If this is the Houghton College in upstate NY, Violadad pegged it. I do know a young lady who went there for VP, and I wasn’t pleased with the way she was sounding after her first year there. By senior year, it was worse. But, that being said, maybe that was just her, or maybe she is related to Binx’s ex-boyfriend! The school is supposed to be pretty, but the campus is hard to get to during the winter since the roads in and out are terrible and there is no way for the highway dept to keep them snow and ice free. THAT might impact a decision to consider the school, since the campus is in an isolated location
Houghton does have a tie of some sort with the Public Broadcasting radio station in Rochester-odd, considering the religious based school and the “public” station- which I’ve never figured out, but they do get great radio reception as a result!</p>
<p>I graduated from the Greatbatch School of Music at Houghton in 2001 in piano performance and went on to get a MM and DMA in music composition. I’m now a college music professor. I can say with some confidence that Greatbatch is an excellent music school that provides a solid education and wonderful interaction with a gifted faculty. I should also mention that in my 4 years there not once was there any difficulty in getting to the campus. They’re actually quite good at keeping the roads clear in that region.</p>

<p>Keeping the roads “clear” is a relative term!! drdave, you are lucky in that you had no problem getting around during your time there, but I had a friend who’s D attended Houghton and when the family would take the girl back to school after a long weekend, a drive that was supposed to take 90 minutes often became a 3 hour trip where speeds never went above 15mph! Living on campus or in the immediate vicinity, one would be just fine, as you were, but the isolation and the harsh winter weather could be a negative for some kids who are used to much more temperate climates!</p>
