<p>My house happened to burn down near the beginning of senior year. I didn’t mention this anywhere in my apps because it’s really not “special” as far as “special circumstances” go, but apparently my GC wrote this in her letter because some stuff has been a bit difficult after that. How would this affect things, in terms of college admissions?</p>

<p>Having the GC mention it is fine, especially if the timing is such that it can explain a sub-par semester grade-wise. It’s better than mentioning it yourself, which can sometimes come across as whining or self-pity.</p>
