House Party Weekend?

I’ve heard about this house party weekend thing, what/when is this?

steve-

if you enjoy a good party… house party weekend at bucknell is about as good as it gets. heck, even if you dont enjoy a good party–like my roomie freshman year–house party weekend is still about as good as it gets.

its usually in the middle of april every year, the culmination of ‘greek week’… but i think its a bit early this year (march 29-31). you pay something like $10 for the entire weekend, for which youll get access to 12-15-(maybe more?) live bands, all the food you can eat (some of which is even prepared by our lovely deans!), and more alcohol than you can safely consume. many people also invite friends from other schools to attend… which is interesting, as youll get a chance to meet your friends friends. but really, people come from all over the mid-atlantic to experience house party. i know im going to be there!

the faculty are well aware of the long-standing tradition and as such will rarely assign work to be completed that weekend. so the drunkards will spend the better part of 72 hours intoxicated… most will spend the majority of that time buzzed… and the rest will more than enjoy themselves between the music and uninhibited stupidity of others. and if you dont want to see drunk people… lock your door and close your blinds. because theyll be everywhere and whoever lived in your room last year will be sure to pay a visit.

i wish i could find a good article, but it appears the bucknellian archives have been redone… and john clarks amazing essay from a few years ago has disappeared into the e-abyss.

so just imagine three days of the following:

so yeah… a three day, more or less campus wide, indoor/outdoor party. and to those reading this who dont drink… i honestly know a ton of people who dont drink who have still had the times of their lives.

(note: you will have class that friday… but the frats tend to get an early start on things.)

edit: neither i nor the linked photos condone underage drinking, which is a criminal offense. gotta stay kosher per ccs terms of service. hehe.

I don’t mean to squash information, just looking for details as my daughter looks at colleges.
Is it really true when you say students who don’t drink will still have a good time at this event (or other general social events) at Bucknell?
Yeah, I went to a big public party school when the drinking age was 18, but I’m hoping for a school for my D that does provide some social life in addition to the drinking scene.
Any honest replies would be very welcome.

yeah, it is true that kids who dont drink have fun at house party. my non-drinking freshman roommate (and the kid across the hall), who i bring up often, spent more time out and about that weekend than i did. he not only didnt drink, but has likely never otherwise stepped foot in a fraternity house. its a party, yes, but a good one… with tons of live music, food, et cetera. definitely more to do than drink.

speaking more generally, yes, people who dont drink can still have a very good time within the bucknell social scene. i drank, but probably only three times per month (less than once per weekend) and always had things to do on both friday and saturday night… and just as importantly, friends to do them with. concerts, shows, shopping at the ‘mall,’ sporting events, impromptu journeys to baltimore for fresh seafood or dc to march for womens reproductive rights, movies, just hanging out in someones room… there was always something to do.

is it the best environment for a non-drinker? i dont know. i havent experienced other environments. but it was definitely good enough to keep me, somewhat a social introvert, from sitting in my room.

note: there is also substance-free housing at bucknell, which is relatively popular, and would surround a non-drinker with tons of other people looking for ‘other’ things to do.

Thanks very much, eric.
Your info. too about trips to big cities will be attractive to my daughter enamored of big-city lights, but also in love with traditional green campuses and small towns.
Small news note: a nearby college for us very similar to Bucknell has a fraternity being investigated for possible hazing this week. Two pledges got very drunk, and a frat member took precautionary measures and took them to a hospital. Sad thing is that at many other places, the frat brothers would’ve just left them to sleep it off in a back room, possibly to have worse things happen. I hope the frat’s proactive approach will ameliorate any claims of pressure on the pledges to drink too much. And I hope the results won’t discourage others from taking measures when they fear for a pledge’s safety.
