Does anyone know when housing selection ends? My son is a current freshman and picked his room in South Quad a a week ago today but his wing is still half empty. There still seem to be a lot of rooms available all over campus. Have some students not had their priority arrive yet or is the housing selector just not up to date? I know all the rooms will be filled eventually especially since they ran out of housing last year. It is an upperclass honors hall so I don’t think it would be filled with freshmen, but maybe it will be if everyone else is done choosing. Thanks.
@2135ar, my current freshman son & his friend are also returning to SQ next year, placed on another floor with supposedly upperclassmen as well. But how do we know/check how full/empty the wing is in the dorm at the moment?
Go to Wolverine Access under My Housing. You have to get through a few steps by clicking on items on the left to and get to the student’s contract contract page (tells what his contract is for next year). Then on the left click on Housing Sign-Up Room Locator. This shows all the rooms that are available. Some rooms say Open and some say Closed. This helped pick the room initially. What I don’t know if it is still valid; there are so many rooms available. So I was thinking maybe current sophomores haven’t had priority yet. I was thinking all the OPEN rooms had not been filled which makes sense if people are just picking. So that was why I was asking. They could be open for freshmen but I would think freshmen would be on their own wings.
I don’t see “My Housing” option in our guest account on WA. I only have access to “Campus Finances”. Perhaps I need to ask my son to grant me access to more features
So, did your son get to pick a specific room in SQ too? Mine told us that he just visited the room he got assigned to for next year on an upper floor; so I assumed that he didn’t get to pick his own room, other than specifying he wanted to return to SQ (with another hallmate who’ll be his future roommate).
My D is also freshman. She is not interested in SQ though. She got a priority code for next Wednesday.
My Housing is the fifth item on the list under Students. Do no click into Student Business which is the first item.
Clicking on “My Housing” under “Students” in WA takes me back to the generic “http://www.housing.umich.edu” page, and I’m unable to navigate to the page to view the available rooms in SQ (or any dorm). I think it’s just the permission issue. I’ve been navigating via “Parents & Family” link instead of “Students” link, using our Guest/Parent account, and I’m unable to see much from here.
I thought all freshmen were assigned the same priority code for housing, but I guess I was wrong. My S (along with most – if not all – his freshman hallmates in SQ) were already notified of their next-year room assignments last week, at least, for those still planning to return to SQ for their Sophomore year.
Thanks billcsho. If your freshman D hasn’t been able to choose yet then that answers my question. There are still a lot of kids who have not chosen yet. Since my son’s priority was January 29, it seems like a long time.
ParentOf 2018: My son did pick his exact room. I believe everyone has that opportunity; My Housing allows them to click on a map and see where the room is located. Not all freshman get the same priority; assignment is random. My son’s wing seems to get them in 20 to 30 minutes intervals. In other words, my son’s priority started January 29 at 11:30 am and his friend’s started the same day at noon. Freshmen do get the same priority in the sense that freshmen (actually students who have lived in residence halls two semesters or less) have priority over others.
As for My Housing, I believe you do have to sign in as the student rather than as a guest. It takes you to the students contract.
Makes sense now. Thanks, @2135ar and @billcsho!
If anyone is reading this and wondering about sign up dates, I found a calendar at http://www.housing.umich.edu/sign-up/calendar. Residential College/Honors started January 29; Triples and Quads started February 5, and Open Sign-Up is February 10-12.
@2135ar Thanks for that link. It makes sense now. My D told me the first day to pick is 2/10 while she got the priority code for the second day. I have heard Markley may be closed permanently next year or two. They may need to reserve some rooms in other halls for freshmen next year. Even with WQ re-opened, it would not have more rooms available next year.
@billscho - is Markley getting refurbed during the '15-'16 school year? Hadn’t heard that.
I have hard they are going to bring it down and give it to the hospital for more parking garage.
Really - wonder if they may pop a new dorm up elsewhere.
I don’t know anything about Markley being torn down (one way or the other) but this article does say that the buildings next to Markley are being torn down for parking. http://inside.housing.umich.edu/content/arbor-heights-buildings-east-mary-markley-hall-will-be-demolished
Also, this September 2013 article, says there were no current plans (at that time) to renovate Markley. http://www.michigandaily.com/news/dorm-renovations-focus-updates-and-communal-spaces
Thanks @2135ar - looks like Markley won’t be torn down. May be a bit of a war zone next to it though this Fall. I also didn’t know Markley was considered a newer dorm. Suppose its all relative.
Markley was built in 1959. It would not be considered “newer” at all. The rumor for tearing down Markley is very recent, much later than that article from 2013.
Oh I just mentioned newer as the article said that the two newer dorms - Markley and Bursley weren’t in the current refurb plans.
I guess it is all relative. I would say it is less old than the other ones in the Hill area. Bursley is at least 10 years younger than Markley. Baits I, Bait II, and most of the Northwood were also built after Markley. North Quad would be the newest.
