Housing for freshmen

I put my deposit down on March 17. It is possible for me to get a pollock Halls single room or North Halls Suite,2 bedroom in fall? What is the chance for each? Thanks a lot.

Singles are hard, period, for freshmen. Doubles (as opposed to quads) in North are also hard, as they are 1. not as numerous and 2. generally reserved for RAs (the spare room is often used to house people having problems with their roommate, or people with medical issues).

That being said, a March deposit should easily net you a room in either of those dorm areas, even if it isn’t the specific type you requested.

Thank you for answering my question.

May I propose another question? If I am not satisfied with the room I will assigned in first place, for example, I get a 4 persons suits, what should I do to make reservation for 2 persons suits? Do I need contact housing office? Or I can make reservation in eliving website? Appreciate for any answer.

Since they are trying to get people to move campuses for housing - housing is at a premium. Unless you get a supplemental, the chances of you changing rooms to a different type is pretty low I think. Once your room is assigned you would have to do a room swap - which means, finding someone with the room type you want and swapping. But there is not a “reservation” system beyond what you should have already done - which is make your living preferences in eliving. But they are just preferences. The majority of the rooms are 2 person rooms, so if that is what you want, you will have no problem. Suites, on the other hand, are almost exclusively for upper classmen and a freshmen has a pretty low chance of getting one.

@jlhpsu I am hoping that the SLOs in North Halls are the exception to this statement above? I will be a freshmen this fall and applied to live in the Arts/Arch SLO.

@Techtheatrewiz Yes, SLO’s are an exception to that statement I believe. The SLO’s tell you where they are, so if Arts and Architecture says North in the suites, then if you get into that SLO, you will live there.

It is a persistent myth that freshmen don’t live in North. Lots of freshmen do…it’s just that there are only 4 halls in North, so your overall chances are statistically smaller and you are less likely to know someone in North, generally speaking… If you put in for an SLO and had your deposit in early, I would be surprised if you weren’t in North next fall. S2 really loved it there.

The swap board will open off the eLiving site right after housing assignments go out. You always have the option to reject a swap if you want to, but there’s no guarantee you’ll find someone who is trying to give up a single room for some reason. But jlh is correct — you get what you get. There is no “wait I don’t like what I got” option and that’s a good intro to life at a big University

When will be informed of our housing allocations i. e. which halls, building, etc.? All I did was fill the housing preference in eLiving couple of months back. Nothing after that.

July 18th for Fall semeter

My daughter thought she was going to hate being assigned to a ‘forced triple’ in McElwain, but she loved everything about it. Initially she had requested East for that ‘true freshman experience’, but was assigned to McElwain in South. Really nice building, and great location next to the HUB in center of campus. The three of them had no problem at all fitting all of their stuff in there even though the room is designed for two.
I would imagine that with this year’s incoming class being larger than ever, that they will ‘triple up’ nearly all of the double rooms in McElwain and Simmons and ‘double up’ the smaller, usually single rooms in there. I am happy to answer specific questions about McElwain if anyone ends up there. Simmons is virtually identical.
Don’t be like me and panic if you get a room assignment that isn’t what you requested, it will likely work out fine and you will really enjoy being at University Park!
