Housing for grad student in Dayton

Apparently, S will be attending grad school in Dayton this fall. Starting to think about housing options. I know U Dayton has a “neighborhood” as well as college-owned housing. Any inside knowledge of the best areas/options? S has a car. Not out of the question that we could buy something.

There’s a lot of partying in that neighborhood. Some kids love it and some kids don’t. Other than regular dorms, some apartment style dorms, and the ghetto (the term for this university-owned neighborhood), I don’t know of anything else that is university owned.

DD and her husband attended UD for undergrad, and they still live in the area. The “ghetto” is almost exclusively undergrads. I know there are some graduate apartments nearby, and the university might have information on those options. Oakwood, the suburb just south of UD is a very nice area, as are areas even further south. The Oregon district, near downtown and not far north of UD is a hip area with lots of nightlife. I don’t know how much housing is in the area though.

If you would buy something in Oakwood, be sure to check out the city restrictions about non-family members sharing a house.

Upon graduation, my DD lived in an apartment in Beavercreek, which is ~20 minutes drive from UD. There is a large lifestyle shopping mall in Beavercreek called The Greene, with lots of restaurant and pub options, so that’s a popular area for post-graduation young people. There are even apartments above the retail spaces at The Greene, but they are pricey. My DD shared a 2-br apartment, near The Greene, for ~$1000/month.

Let me know if you want me to ask DD or her Husband for suggestions.

Are there areas that are particularly bad - i.e. with crime, etc.? S would probably prefer to be close to campus, despite having a car.

I’ll PM you.
