Housing in L.A. for Boalt Summer Interns

I saw a post last week from a Berkely mother inquiring about summer housing, transportation and general advice for her daughter who will be doing her internship here in Los Angeles. When I tried to respond, I was told I had to register as a member. I quickly registered and returned to the site and her posting had completely disappeared. I have worked and lived in the academic community in L.A. for over 30 years. Having shepherded many out of town grads and undergrads through the L.A. experience, I had hoped to reach this parent. Being a mother of a grad student who did her internship in a city 3,000 miles away, I totally related to her concerns. If she, or anyone wants info on summer housing in safe areas close to the business centers of Los Angeles, or information on any student issues…please feel free to contact me…Kinderkind

Hi there, I am trying to help a friends daughter with housing for a summer internship in Van Nuys. I’m from LA so she thought I would know something, but I left LA in 1980! Her internship is unpaid so she is looking for the most modest housing avail. You are very kind to offer your wisdom! She is at Univ. of Kansas.

Van Nuys is in the east San Fernando Valley. Perhaps sublets from students at Cal State Northridge or something with Valley (Community) College. Van Nuys is a pretty mixed area, so modest might not be entirely safe. None of the nearby communities are really draws for college age students, but Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and North Hollywood do have some fun, trendy areas. Craigslist might be the best bet for those areas.
