Can anyone give me information about housing in Providence (area of Brown)? We are looking for an apartment in a decent neighborhood. Are there ones to avoid? My son is contemplating Brown for grad school and we are weighing the options. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a wide range of apartments for rent around Brown, not only right on College Hill, but around Wayland Square, Thayer Street, Brown Stadium – all within walking distance of Brown. Try Craigslist (specify East Side, Brown in criteria). There are several real estate companies – Samson, Legacy, etc. – who specialize in apts. around that area.

Most Brown students find housing early – as in January for the following September. It’s kind of weird since leases are signed then for June to June rentals. Nonetheless, it seems there are always apts. opening up.

Good luck.

D who is in Grad School in St Louis was able to use the resources of the Grad Office on her campus for housing referrals.People also use Craigs List.
Be careful when looking, Grad students don’t enjoy living where the undergrads do, thats why the Grad Office is usually a good starting point(this could be different from an Off-Campus office or referral site)
.There are usually landlords who will only rent to Grads. The students usually want a calmer, over 21 type surrounding, where drunken undergrads and police calls to the complex are not a regular occurence.

Did you try the Brown forum? Even though it’s geared towards undergrads…they may have some info. about neighborhoods…
